Family Search 1881 census: FREE. Search the 1881 census (note "Lost Cousins" below).

Family Search (IGI): FREE. Basic information on baptisms and marriages, mainly for pre-National Registration but includes a fair amount of post-1837 information.

FreeBDM: FREE. On-line database of reference numbers for National Registration certificates from 1837. This site is very useful for finding the maiden name of a wife.

Genes Reunited: Annual subscription. Nice and cheap, and great for making contact with others researching shared ancestry.

Lost Cousins: FREE (for the basics). Input the details of your ancestors from the 1881 census (see "Family Search" above) and check to see if others have the same.

FreeReg: FREE - records being added. Free Internet searches of baptism, marriage, and burial records, that have been transcribed from parish and non-conformist registers of the U.K.. A companion project to FreeBMD.

Ancestry Host: Free genealogy website hosting.

Other sites I use
