Esther recalls how she used to walk with her sister Ruth (Martha Ruth) all the way up Boundary Street, over a creek bridge then further up to the school. They had no books in those days so used a slate and slate pencil. Esther remembered sharpening the slate pencil on a concrete storm water drain which bordered the school. They would sit in the classroom on forms at long benches with ink well . . . .
