My great grandmother was Emily Batten (nee Yeo) she ran businesses (a pub and a shop in which she also cooked fish and chips to take-away!) in Bideford East-the-Water during WW2, prior to this she and my great grandfather ran a farm near Bude.

Her mother's name was Hannah Yeo (nee Folly/ Folley) who was born in 'Roose's (Rouse's/Rowse's?) House, Jacobstowe in about 1850.

On Hannah's birth certificate her mother is registered as Salley Folley. No father is registered. Many years ago my family made a visit to Jacobstowe and learned that at
about the time of Hannah's birth there had been a series of bad harvests and much of the village had upped and emigrated to America. It is possible that
Salley went as well, leaving Hannah in the care of another relative. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who may have un-earthed any
information about Hannah and Salley in their research.

Tom Westaway

I am searching for the parents and siblings of Elizabeth Yeo, christened 20 October 1776 at Morwenstow, Cornwall, England. She married William Westaway on 23 March 1804 in Poughill, Cornwall, England. Elizabeth died in Detroit, Michigan, USA and was buried in Sandwich, Essex County, Ontario, Canada.
William and Elizabeth emigrated from England in 1832, arriving in Sandwich, Essex County, Ontario, Canada on June 1, 1832. Either that same year or a year or two later, William Westaway died. In 1840, Elizabeth married Richard Rhodes, also born somewhere in England. They settled in Detroit, Michigan. In the 1850 U.S. Census for Michigan, there is a Rhichard
Rhodes, age 52, living with an Elizabeth Rhodes, age 74. If this is Elizabeth Yeo,
then she would have been born in about 1776. I would appreciate any
information about Elizabeth Yeo.

Alice P Pogue

Bryan Smith

John YEO who married Martha Bennett and who were the supposed parents of my adoptive grandfather, Charles Heard YEO who married a Susan Stanaway in 1873?. Unfortunately he appears to have been born some years after the death of his father so there is a bit of a problem with the YEO name being a legitimate part of the family.

Seeking any information re Mary Ann Yeo who married James Alfred Williams in Bristol, England in 1852. They emigrated to Australia soon after their marriage and lived in Melbourne, and for a short time Ballarat, Victoria. Mary Ann's parents were Peter Yeo and Mary Irish. Would welcome any snippets of information that might help in my search.

Christine Higgins

My great great grandfather, John Yeo, born around 1841. All that is known is that he was a butcher who married Grace GLOVER, born 1841, Milton Damerel, near Holsworthy, Devon. Evidence would suggest that he travelled quite a lot as I have been unable to find him in the census records.

Their first child, John, was born in Buckland Brewer near Bideford in 1861, however they do not appear to have been living there at the time of the census. They had two daughters, the first was Kate, born in Milton Damerel in 1866.

John Yeo was killed in July 1869 (aged 28) whilst travelling to Briton Ferry, West Glamorgan, where their daughter, Bessie, was born.

Thereafter Grace remarried and moved to London with Kate, leaving her two other children, John and Bessie, to live with her parents in Milton Damerel.

Although I have been in touch with Sheila Yeo (Yeo Society) to discover John Yeo's birthplace, we could only establish that my John Yeo was not from Milton Damerel.

I am now at the stage of trying to search the 1861 census for Devon and Cornwall in an attempt to find a John Yeo aged around 20, probably already married to Grace by this time.

Jolene Moore

I emailed you previously in the early spring admiring your web site on the Yeo family. I informed you that I too was a decendent and also worked at the Yeo House Museum in Prince Edward Island Canada. I am afraid that the
site is in danger of closing. The Heritage foundation of Prince Edward Island was turned a blind eye to what I feel is extremely important history.
We had a bad ice storm here on PEI in April which left a lot of trees destroyed. These trees down in Green Park have yet to be cleaned up. There has been rumour that Heritage wants to close that site and evidence of just this has been arising. The director of the museum did not get her job back and is not being replaced.

So, with this said, I was wondering if you would be interested or if there is any way you could help me. If we could gather some interest from Yeo decendents to keep the museum alive and contact the Heritage foundation, it
would be a start. I thought of your web site when I was trying to decide what I could do, and assumed you too are as passionate about the Yeo history as I am and could be in contact with other Yeo decendents through your web
page. I am a twenty one year old female living in a rural community, we still are not always taken seriously.

Anything you could do to help would be greatly appreciated,
Jolene Moore

While surfing the net, I came upon your web page on Yeo Family History. I
recently worked at Green Park Historic Yeo House and Shipbuilding Museum in
Port Hill, PEI. Over the summer I have gained a new appreciation and
interest in James Yeo's history. I myself am a descendent of the Yeo's and
really learned a lot from your website and links to the Island Registry that
I did not know existed.

I just wanted to thank you for your informative website.

I am researching for a book about Exmoor ponies and have found reference to the fact that " ~1880-1882 James Yeo of New South Wales imported a stallion called "Sir Thomas" from the Acland herd.

I would like to find out as much as I can about James Yeo but looking through the site it seems that more than one James Yeo went out to Australia. Can anyone help clarify this for me please?

Cheryl Wilson

Alan & Norma Falconer

I am a Canadian descendant of James Yeo 1765 - 1840 married to Ann Osborn and Grace Francis. Many of his descendants settled in Prince Edward Island. There is also a second Yeo family, that of Richard Yeo and Catherine Moyse, who had descendants also settle in PEI. Many of the latter generations moved on to the eastern US.  I am looking for anyone doing research on these families. Norma Falconer R.R. # 1 Auburn, Ontario. Marynernie

My name is Ernest Jett.  I live at Tyler, Texas.  My 11th grandmother may have been Joan Yeo, who married John Triplett in Padstow, Cornwall Sept 20, 1599.  Their daughter was Mary Triplett, wife of Peter Jett.  They were the progenitors of the large Jett family who live in many of the Southern States of the U.W.

Lorraine Lund

I notice that the Alan and Norma Falconer memo mentions 2 Yeo families on Prince Edward Island in Canada. I am from a third Yeo line on PEI which is unconnected to either of the two she mentions. I am sure they are related in Bideford (since all 3 Yeo lines originate there), but I have been unable to find a connection yet. This third Yeo line is from Robert Yeo (1815-1889), son of  Richard Yeo (bp 18-Jun-1786) a shoemaker, and Susanna Pilliphant. Robert Yeo (1815-1889) married 03-Apr-1842 in the Register office in Bideford, England, Mary Ann Fulford (dau. of William Fulford). Robert Yeo and his new bride, Mary Ann (Fulford) emigrated from Bideford to Prince Edward Island soon after their marriage. They had a family of 6 sons and 1 daughter.

Karen Stanaway (Jan 10)

Charles Yeo married a Susan Stanaway circa 1877 and they came to Australia on the "Dunbar Castle" on 11 Sep 1878. Do you know the names of Susan's parents. The reason I ask is that my g-g-g-grandparents, William Francis Stanaway and Fanny Ann (nee Roberts) also arrived in Brisbane on the "Dunbar Castle" in Sep 1878. William Francis was baptised on 10 Jun 1849 in Truro, Cornwall. His parents were Matthew and Amelia (nee Miners)

Jim (James Alfred) Yeo

I understand we originally were originally in Swimbridge, Devon UK. The best I can trace is back with any accuracy is 8 generations to a Bartholomew Yeo (1674 to 1750) who married Margaret Slade in 1707 at Landkey. I have knowledge (with few details) of a further 12 generations going back to a William Yeo of Heanton Sachville who seems to have been the Sheriff(?) of Devon in 1359. James Yeo (born October 1816) married an Elizabeth Yeo (oops?) These arrived in Australia (Melbourne) in 1855 on the ship "James Baines". They transferred to a steamship "Hellespont" to Sydney and railed to Morpeth (near Maitland) New South Wales. They had 8 children. That was the beginning of our family in Australia.

Researching the pedigree of ELIZABETH YEO (b. ca. 1650) who married Oliver Rouse (or Rowse), Merchant of Hatherleigh, Devon in 1675. Elizabeth is believed to be the daughter of John YEO & Elizabeth Hussey and is descended from William YEO (and Elin Greenfield) of Heanton Sachville.

Dodie Perry

Have been tracing my family tree and my mothers family has been traced back to 1765---James Yeo born 1765 in England married Ann Osborn in 1788 and Grace Frances in 1807. He died 1840.

Linda Cross

My ancestor Henry AVERY married Mary YEO at Stoke Damerel 29 July 1814. Witnesses were John YEO and Elizabeth Avery.

Tom Westaway

My 4th Great-Grandfather, William Westaway, married Elizabeth Yeo 23 March 1804 at Poughill, Cornwall, England.  In 1832, they left England and came to the town of Sandwich, Essex County, Ontario, Canada.  In either that same year or in 1835, William died.  Elizabeth Yeo then married Richard Rhodes in 1840 and settled in Detroit, Michigan.  In the 1850 US Census,
Elizabeth is listed as part of the family of Richard Rhodes.  Her age is listed as 74, which means that she was born about 1776, supposedly in Cornwall.  I do not know who her parents are.  William and Elizabeth had 7 children.

Richard Rodd

I am looking for any information you or your web site visitors may have on Samuel Rodd (1807-1882), husband of Ann Maria Yeo (1808-1861) and son-in-law of James Yeo (1765-1840) and Grace Francis (1768-1841). Of particular interest is Samuel's parents, siblings, homestead, and other kin. Also, any light that can be shed on what influenced the decision to move from Kilkhampton, Cornwall, England to Lot 16, Prince Edward Island, North America would be great. It is my understanding that they made the voyage sometime in the 1830 to 1832 range. Thank you for your efforts,

Please go here http://www.cyberway.com.sg/~paulrw/Thomas.htm there are Yeos listed in this family tree

Tom McCormick

John Hugh Yeo born bef 1508 in Hatherleigh married Anne ???? (my note saying Honeychurch as the surname, but that looks like a strong possiblity of confusion with place not surname). Anne is supposed to have been born before 1510 in Hatherleigh, also. They had a daughter Arminell Yeo who married into my ancestral line, to one William Weekes b1530 in Honichurch, Devon, and they had a son Joseph Weekes born about 1570, possibly in Honichurch.

Vida Tattrie

I am trying to trace my husband's family. His name is Raymond D. Yeo. From what little bit I have been able to trace is that his great-great grandfather was a Thomas Yeo, born in England in 1819. He married a woman with the first name of Sarah. I believe she was born in PEI Canada in 1825. Two of their children were John and Richard. They lived in the Tignish, Alberton, Alma area of PEI. They were Roman Catholic. Any information on their ancestors or descendants would help me fill some holes in my search.

Sylvia Chamberlain Steeves

I am researching Alberta Elsie Yeo, daughter of William Yeo, Jr. born July 24, 1890, and my granduncle, Henry William Chamberlain, who married in Wingham, Turnberry Township, Huron County, Ontario, on 25 August 1915. Finding their progeny, if any, is of greatest interest. I know that William Yeo went to Canada from Devon in 1850, with his wife, Jane, and bought 100 acres in Bluevale, Huron County, Ontario. One of his grandchildren was Alberta. William's children were Joseph, Maryann, William, Jane and Agnes. This information was recorded in the 1871 census in that County. William Jr. married Nancy Brethair and had Alberta, William and Jane. Acreage passed back and forth between the Yeos in this county - William Yeo, Robert Yeo, Verna Yeo, Sparling Yeo, Wesley Yeo, and Susannah Yeo, who was executrix for George Yeo's estate. If anyone has information on Alberta and Henry Chamberlain.

Simon Yeo.

Your "Yeo Researchers" web site looks interesting. Do you have any information on the YEO name in Australia?

Greg Sheehy

Been tracing our family tree for over 20 years, have run into some big problems, "no or very little info available". Elizabeth (?) (1803-1877) married Isaac Yeo(no birth or death dates)-Children: 1. Theresa(1847-1919) born on ship"Theresa" while in Irish Sea(my maternal great grandmother) married Captain William Crocker-had 9 children including my maternal grandfather, also 2. William(1836-1861) married Mary Ann(1837-1861) - both drowned in 1861. Children: Mary Jane(1860). Yeo's owned & lived on Torrens Island, Adelaide, South Australia, no matter who disagrees. Where in Ireland did Isaac & Elizabeth come from, and dates? If you can find these things out it would be a big help.

I am researching my Yeo family back through England. Thomas YEO born abt. 26 February 1772 in Werrington, Cornwall, England, and died 11 April 1837 in Worthing, Bridgerule, Devon, England. He married Elizabeth MASON 9 April 1793 in Boyton, Cornwell, England. UK. She was born abt. 1769, and died 21 February 1851 in England. UK.

Christine Yeo

My grandfather's name was Everett Henry Yeo He was married to Lucille Mae Yeo He was born on April 2, 1912 He died on March 22, 1985 ss# was 560-18-7976 He was born in Oregon His mother's maiden name was Gregory I don't really know anything else. My grandma told me that his family lines go back to Rob Roy? My Dad had a Yeoman coat of arms.

Jean Gaw

My maternal grandmother was a Yeo. Her name was Ruth Anna Yeo, d/o Harry Yeo and Laura Shutte. She was born in 1893 in Richmond, In and died 1967 in New York City. Harry was the s/o Jonas W. Yeo and Emily Robinson of Wayne Co. Indiana. Harry Yeo died in Salt Lake City, but is buried in the family plot in Richmond, Indiana. Emily was the d/o Francis Wills Robinson and Susannah Brown Erwin of Richmond, Wayne Co. Indiana. Last year, I was able to locate the history of the Robinson family. FW Robinson was born 1810, Baltimore MD and married in 1836 to Susannah Erwin in Richmond. In 1828, his parents and 7 siblings moved from Baltimore to Richmond, INd taking national toll roads and ferry's. I have family letters dated as early as 1828, some dated 1849 through 1875 on members of the Robinson-Erwin lines; found the Robinsons from Manchester, England, 1698 and came over on one of William Penn's four fleet ships. These were Quakers and I have found much documentation to substantiate the family letters I have. I would like to find the parents of Jonas W Yeo and where his parents are from. I posted some headstones of Yeos buried in Independence, Jackson Co. MO last year from a research trip I made to locate my great grandfather who died in Independence. I was surprised to see Yeos in Missouri.

Douglas Edward Yeo

Rev. George Edward Yeo (married to Helen Storey) was Canon of Barbados and Barbuda (British West Indies)in mid 1800's, and lived in St. Kitts, Barbados, Barbuda and Jamaica. Among his nine children were Clarence James Hope Yeo (b St. Christopher, BWI 1879-1965),Georgia (Georgena) Yeo, Hugh Edmond Storey Yeo, Moira Lena Reid Yeo, Elma Isabella Brancil Yeo, and Cecil Yeo. Clarence James Hope Yeo was father of Clarence Edward Yeo (b Brooklyn NY 1901-1971), father of Alan Deane Yeo (b Brooklyn, NY 1930), who is my father. Any information relating to Rev. George Edward Yeo would be greatly appreciated - I have family, census and church records I am willing to share and am most interested in making the connection of GEYeo to England. Henry Reed

My ancestor was a small figure in the US Navy during the War of 1812 (and of whom I know very little) but he had an interesting historical meeting with Capt. James Lucas Yeo. Capt. G.W. Reed's father was more famous... General Joseph Reed. He named his son after his friend and leader George Washington (see American patriot web sites). If fact I found the portrait and documentation concerning Sir James on the Web. (see: Royal Navy). I have a written document*..an article more like.. by a sailor who was on the US Brig. Vixen. I'd just love to "meet" a direct ancestor of Sir James.

Emma and William Yeo

William George Yeo, was born in London on 3 April, 1958. We are interested in tracing the Yeo family connection in Gibraltar (and Spain). His fatherīs name was James Yeo (born in Gibraltar) and his grandfather was also William Yeo. Any clues? Thanks and regards,

Ralph Yeo

Robert Yeo son of John Yeo- Martha Hambly

I believe my Ann Yoe descends from a family of early Marylanders. John Yoe, Planter. of Calvert co. MD 1660s and 1670s.
Hugh Yoe and wife Ann Yoe of Somerset county 1670s and 1680s.

Ann Yoe born 1753 married Capt. Benjamin Dashiell of the Dashiell family of Somerset County MD. The Dashiell family is a first family of Maryland. I believe this Yoe family may well be a first family also.

They are with other prominent families in both counties in the 1600s. Jones is one such family they are connected to in both counties at the same time.

I am researching all Yoe people in Maryland for 1600s and 1700s.

Peter Reading

I am researching my Yeo family back through England.
1. THOMAS4 YEO (JOHN3, HUMPHREY2, HUMPHREY1) was born Abt. 26 February 1772 in Werrington, Cornwall, England, and died 11 April 1837 in Worthing, Bridgerule, Devon, England. Caroline Cavanagh

I only have one generation of Yeo family, as follows - all events happened
in St Cleer, Cornwall:

John Yeo bur 1719; marr to Anne bur 1719.
Children: 1 George bap 1679 (as Yow); bur 1711; marr Anne, children
Elizabeth bap 1705 (as Yeow) who married Henry Benney in St Cleer; and Mary
bap 1708, bur 1711.
2 Margaret bap 1680 (as Yow); bur 1680 (as Yow);
3. Ann bap 1681 (as Yowe); probably bur 1683 (as Agnis Yeo);
4. Elizabeth bap 1682; bur 1684;
5. Mary bap 1684; bur 1709;
6. Thomasin bap 1685; bur 1686;
7. Grace bap 1686; bur 1686;
8. John bap 1687; bur 1688.

So only one child survived to adulthood. I'm hoping someone could tell me
about the father John and where he came from.

I'm hunting for William Yeo, married to Thomasin who lived in Luxulyan in Cornwall in the mid 1600s. Sheila suggested I take a look at Luxulyan's PRs, so I'm back with my report. I searched all BMB from 1600-1740 and found: 7 Aug 1656 bur John Yowe (?a son, or perhaps father/uncle?) 22 Oct 1663 bur Anne Yeow (prob dau) 14 Sep 1685 bur William Yow (prob husband to Thomasin) 6 Aug 1689 bur Thomasin Yow (we already knew this entry). 24 Jun 1656 marr William Yeo 'and his wife' (we already knew this entry) 6 Jun 1687 marr Richard Yeo and 'An [sic] his wife' (prob son to William and Thomasin) 1704 marr George Yeo and Ann Ayre (we already knew this entry) No baptisms for any Yeo (and variants) although there were some entries that looked like 'Yaro' in the mid 1600s but these later turned into Earo. As for Thomasin's baptism, there were a few from 1623-1634 but no clues which one may have become William's wife. I will do more hunting for Richard and Ann and their children in other parishes. As for William the father, I remember Sheila mentioned in a message to me that she wasn't certain for sure where he came from - I'm wondering if you have any ideas or hints that I could follow up on? Many thanks for any help or advice you can give me. You're my only hope!! Caroline Cavanagh Darwin, Australia carolinecav@optusnet.com.au

Kris Webb [Mrs] Kris.Webb@barnet.gov.uk

I enjoyed your Yeo website. I am doing a lot of research on the areas of Pelynt/Duloe/Talland/Lanteglos and my main search name is Slade. Slades married into the Broad family many times as well as many other local families. I think it must be 'my' Charlie Broad who married Flossie Yeo, it so, they had a son called Donald. Charlie was the son of Richard Broad and Ann Lean. Do you have any more information on Flossie? I have a little information on Mahala Collings [who married Walter Searle]. There are other common names mentioned in your tree which may tie in at some stage with mine, will let you know if I find anything.

Keith Mortimer

I am trying to find out about a William Yeo who was a wine and spirit merchant in Barnstaple in the late 1840s-early1850s, he was in partnership with Shapland in 1843, but I am trying to find out the date when he went out on his own. Any help would be much appreciated Kind Regards Chris Mortimer

Billie Yeo Williams

I am a Yeo who is just beginning to trace my family tree. I know very little about my grandparents and really don't know how to start this journey. What do you suggest? I have been to the Genealogy Library here in Houston, Texas and have found my grandparents and their children listed in the 1920 US Census. All of my father's siblings are deceased now except for his older sister, who is in her 90's. I would like to go and interview her with a tape recorder but don't even know what questions to ask. The census and family history tells me that both my grandparents came from England to the US (New York first, then Texas), and they also say that we had a relative who was a Captain in the Royal Navy. I suspect he's the one who had the ships in Canada during the War of 1812, but can't be sure. Any suggestion you could offer would be most appreciated. Thank you so much for the website. Bob Pearn

I have been searching for my Pearn ancestors for a couple years now but
can't seem to get any further then 1891. I recently went to Salt Lake City
in the USA where the LDS have the largest genealogy library in North
America. The volunteers helping me were also stumped with my Pearn
ancestors. The only option I have is to go through all the 1871 micro fiche.

I am hoping you might recall the Pearn's listed below in your research.

I have found census's for 1891 and 1901 of the family.
