LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF NICHOLAS VARCOW

Nicholas Varcoe1570 who married Joan b 1570 who has daughter Eide Varcoe, who married Philemon Elford 1590-1645 and had son Robert Elford b 1614.

I in the name of God amen I Nicholas Varcow of the p(ar)ishe of St Dennys in the countye of Cornwall yeoman the xxijth day / of March in the yere of o(u)r Lorde God 1614 beinge sicke ofbody / but p(er)fytt of mynd God be thancked doe make and ordayne / this my last will and testament in manner folowinge. First / I bequethe my soule to almightii God my maker and redeemer / and my boddy to Christian buryall.

It(e)m I geve / to wards th(e) rep(ar)acyon of the church of St Dennys a quart of tyn. It(e)m I give to Pascas Varcoe and her children one yeo.

It(e|)m I geve / to children of Ede my dafter each of them a shepe.

It(e)m/ I geve to Pyllmon Ilford and Ede his wife my dafter five pounds / of lefull mony of England to be paid w(i)thin one year after my deth, so that the said Phyllymon doe make a gen(er)all release to my/ executors when they shall require the same.

It(e)m I geve unto my dafter Ede aforesaid a lambe.

It(e)m I give to Thomas Corne / ten shilling(e)s. Ans all the resydew of my good(e)s and chattels / not geven of bequeathed I geve and bequeth to John Varcow and / William Varcoe my sonns, who I doe make my hole / executors.

AnD all former wils and testament(e)s legacyes and bequethes / I do here by adnull and revoke. And here by doe ordayne / Thomas Corne my over seer to see this my will p(er)formed.

Robert Varcoe

Edgcumbe House, Parkwoon, Roche

In the

County of Cornwall

18th. Day of August 1906

(and Codicil  18th. Day of February 1910)

I  Robert  Varcoe  of  Edgcumbe  House,  Parkwoon,  In  the  Parish  of  Roche  in  the  County  of  Cornwall  Retired  Auctioneer  hereby  revoke  all  former  Wills  and  testamentary  dispositions  by  me  made  and  declared  this  to  be  my  last  Will  and  Testament.

I  direct  that  my  just  debts  funeral  and  testamentary  expenses  shall  be  paid  as  soon  as  may  be  after  my  decease.

I  give  to  my  dear  wife  Susan  Jane  Varcoe  All  my  Leasehold  Dwelling-house  two  Shops  Garden  and  premises  known  as  Edgcumbe  House  in  Roche  aforesaid  together  with  the  Household  furniture  and  effects  therein.

I  also  give  to  my  said  Wife  all  my  Leasehold  House  and  Lands  situate  at  Hendra  in  the  Parish  of  Roche  aforesaid.

I  also  give  to  my  wife  ten  shares  in  the  Capital  &  Counties  Bank,  ‘Ltd  All  the  before  mentioned  bequests  I  give  to  my  said  wife  for  her  sole  use  and  benifit  absolutely.

I  give  to  my  daughter  Helena  Augusta  Mary  Roberts  my  Leasehold  land  situate  at  Victoria  Road  part  of  Churchtown  Common  in  the  said  Parish  of  Roche  containing  about  six  Acres  and  subject  thereto  I  charge  the  said  Leasehold tenement with  the  payment  of  the  sum  of  Two  Pounds  per  annum  to  my  daughter  Edith  Cornelia  Curtis  for  her  life  if  my  Interest  therein  shall  so  long  continue.

I  give  to  my  daughter  Milicent  Elizabeth  Richards  Jane  the  sum  of  Fifty  pounds.

I  give  to  my  daughter  Clarissa  Eliza  Spinks  One  Share  in  the  Capital  and  Counties  Bank  Limited  and  also  the  sum  of  Forty  pounds.    I  give  to  my  daughter  Edith  Cornelia  CurtiS  one  share  in  the  Capital  and  Counties  Bank  limited  and  also  the  sum  of  Fifty  pounds.  I  give  to  my  daughter  Lucie  Annie  Waters  the  sun  of  Eighty  pounds..  I  give  to  my  daughter  Julia  Alberta  Emily  Varcoe  Five  shares  In  the  Capital  and  Counties  Bank  Limited  and  also  the  sum  of  Fifty  pounds.  I  give  to  my  son  William  Richards  Varcoe  the  sum  of  Fifty  pounds.  I  give  to  my  son  Arthur  Albert  George  Varcoe  three  shares  In  the  Goonvean  China  Clay  and  Stone  Company  and  also  the  sum  of  Ten  pounds,

I  give  to  my  son  Guy  Robert  Edward  Varcoe  Four  Shares  in  the  Goonvean  China  Clay  and  Stone  Company  the  sum  of  ten  pounds.

I  give  to  my  son  Arnold  Egbert  Thomas  Hicks  Varcoe  the  sum  of  ten  Fifty  pounds7

I  give  to  William  Hicks  Stephens  my  Wife’s  son  the  sum  of  ten  pounds.  I  direct  that  all  the  above  mentioned  Legacies  and  Shares  shall  be  paid  or  transferred  to  the  before  mentioned  Legatees  within  six  calendar  Months  from  the  date  of  my  decease.

I  give  to  my  Grandson  Robert  Varcoe  Son  of  my  said  Arthur  Albert  George  Varcoe  the  sum  of  Twenty  pounds  to  be  paid  to  him  on  his  attaining  the  age  of  twenty  one  years.

All  the  rest  residue  and  remainder  of  my  estate  and  effects  of  whatever  description  whether  real  or  personal  which  I  may  die  possessed  of  I  give  to  my  wife  absolutely.

Lastly  I  appoint  my  said  wife  SuSan  Jane  Varcoe  and  my  friend  George  Burrow  of  St.Columb  Bank  Manager  Trustees  and  executors  of  this  my  will.

In  addition  to  the  sum  of  Fifty  pounds  which  I  have  given  to  my  Son  Arnold  Egbert  Thomas  Hicks  Varcoe  by  my  said  Will  I  give  to  my  said  Son  Arnold  Egbert  Thomas  Hicks  Varcoe  Five  Shares  In  the  Goonvena  China  Stone  &  Clay  Company  for  his  own  use  and  benifit  absolutely

And  In  all  other  respects  I  confirm  my  said  will.

Richard & Jennifer Varcoe lived and farmed at Higher Penrose or Penrose Vean, St. Dennis about the end of the eighteenth century. (Please note from Glenn Perry"Richard & Jennifer Varcoe lived and farmed at Higher Penrose or Penrose Vean, St. Dennis about the end of the eighteenth century."
Then 3 children... but this is wrong. The above Richard & Jennifer are
not their parents. Their parents were Robert Varcoe (1763-1818) &
Elizabeth Tretheway (1765-1815).

3. James ("Mister Jim")

4. Joanna? Wm. Key of Carnegga Farm.  He died 1847.

5 A daughter married"Grigg of Penrose"

and other children, I think.

Around the years 1825-1827 Widow Varcoe, as she then was, came over and rented the farm of Great Gothers for her son John.  She was a very capable person and it was said she used to attend the Summercourt Fair and whilst sitting in the saddle of her horse or pony, transacted her business, with the merchants and dealers.  Her son John and his descendants lived and farmed here for seventy years till the Mellows came from Newmore in 1897.  The Varcoes worked and lived on a coarse diet of fat pork, salted pilchards, heavy barley bread, broth, strong beer, cattle cabbage, potatoes, field swedes etc.  Although they were holders of shares of 100pounds each in the Goonvean China Clay and Stone Co. Ltd. formed in 1833.

Mister John's Wife (1809-1861) was a Stephens from the Miners Arms Public House St. Dennis. .  Their family.

1. Robert Varcoe 1825-1910 married Caroline Richards (1825-1877) Robert was an auctioneer at Roche (Edgecombe House) before 1889.

Their children were, John, Arnold, Julia, and a

daughter married to a Roberts, a builder.

2. Caleb Varcoe (D 1907) of Nanpean Farm married a Thomas Welsh.  Their children.

1. John (C1854-1930) he did railway construction work in New Zealand about 1877.

2. Mary married a railway official she died in 1932. Annie (1866-1955 married Eddie James, d1914.

3.Elizabeth married Joseph Truscott.

4.Lauriona married a Kellow? 

5.Nelly, unmarried.

3. John Varcoe 1830-1896. farmed at Great Gothers Married his 1st Cousin Elizabeth Varcoe (d 1918, Elizabeth was the daughter of "Captain Bill" Their

children were,

Arthur William (1863-1945) farmer at Domelick

Mary Tabitha married Harry Bullock of St. Dennis Beatrice married John Julian? farmer.d1937

4. Cornelius Varcoe (1834-1913) married Mary Best (1835-1897) of Nanpean, daughter of Captain James Best 1786-1872, the first china-clay agent in Cornwall. Their children were

1. Charles 1858-1940

2. James Best 1862-1933 immigrated to Australia in 1883 and married Christina Green in Lithgow NSW. James only had one child Mary Varcoe, born 24th May 1887 and died 17 November 1973.  Mary married William Edward Crase in Parramatta on 18th November 1916.  They had Harry Varcoe Crase born 4 December 1921 who married Constance Smith on 21st November 1942.  James also married Mary Emma Thomas but no children.

3. Joshua Varcoe (1864-1942) immigrated to Australia and married Matilda Jane Delbridge. Matilda’s parents were John Delbridge and Mary Oliver also from Cornwall they immigrated to Australia. Joshua is my Grt. grandfather. Children of Joshua and Matilda were;

1.  Stanley Cornelius Varcoe born 5 April 1896, married Elizabeth McDonald Roberts in 1940, one child Donald who married Isabella and had 4 children, Elizabeth, Maurice, Donald plus one other.

2.John Roy Varcoe. born 6 August 1897, died 1941.

3.Mary Irene (known as Rene) Varcoe born 21 March 1905 Married Robert Methven.  Had 2 children, Elizabeth, who Married Robert Harris and John, never married.  Mary was married a second time to Harold Weatherby.

4. Rupert Delbridge Varcoe 10 January 1909 died 12 March, 2001 married Marjorie Marks, no children.

5. Doris Myrtle Varcoe born 22 October 1911 married Wilson McIllroy Johnston.  They had 3 children Robert and his twin brother Wilson Roy (the twin died) born 14 April 1943.  Robert married Robyn ? and has 3 daughters. Marilyn born 23 December 1946 married John Posker and has 2 children Jason deceased 2000, and Nicole.

6.  Keith Best Varcoe born 19 May 1913 died 23 January 1990 married Jean Coleman in 1942.  Had 1 child Gale Laura Varcoe born 15 July 1943. Gale married Ronald Mervyn Roy, 2 children Steven James Roy born 16 December 1969 and Nicole Anne born 3 June 1973.  Nicole is married to Collin John Wiggins.

4. John Varcoe (1866-1931) immigrated to the USA/Canada

and married Elizabeth Scare/Score and later returned to Cornwall.

5. Fanny Varcoe (1870-1953) married George Bullock.

5. Moses Varcoe (1837-1907) married Jemima Blake. They farmed at Little Gothers. St. Dennis. Their family.

John (1871-1956) married Susan Jane Cowling (1884-1968) of St. Columb.

Annie? married Martin ? she died in Canada in 1921.

Mary married William Coad. They farmed at St. Dennis.

6 James Varcoe (D 1901) also married a Varcoe of Whitepit, St. Dennis.  Their family

1.Eva married Richard Trethewey?

2. Mary married Moses Bullen who later became an official on the railways in India.

3. Elizabeth Florence (1869-1957 married John Bunt. (1869-1918) He was a farmer and clayworks engineer.

4. John (1866-1940) an Architect and builder in London.

5. William.  lived in London.

7. Elizabeth (1840-1942married Richard Varcoe (1838-1897) a Blacksmith of Whitepit, St Dennis. Their family

1. Richard an engineer at Great Eastern Railway works at Lincoln.

2. WIilliam George (1870-1941) Blacksmith at St. Dennis.

3.Thomas, Outfitter at St. Dennis d 1937.

4. Mary (1861-?) married James Giles a farmer of St. Dennis.

5. Another daughter married Tom Brokenshire of Bugle.

6. Janie (1880-1971) married Thomas Hawkey of Roche.
