Jodie (March 10)

My g/g/grandfathers name was John Vercoe and the information i have was he migrated to Australia around 1854 possibly as a widow with two children, one of which would have been William Gilbert Morris Vercoe. He settled in Maitland NSW and married Sarah Ford in 1863. If your able to assist me in anyway with any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Rachael Varcoe (July09)

I am researching my husband’s family tree and need information on George Henry Varcoe, born 1851 in Buckland Dinham, Frome, Somerset, England. He came to Australia and married Emily Jane Kimpton (born 5 April 1857) in 1878. So far I have not been able to find his parents or when he came to Australia. I am also looking for information on Ernest Stanley Varcoe (Stan) born 1896 near Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Stan is one of George’s sons.

David Mitchell (Dec 08)

I have sent this reply which indicates my interest to W Henwood who posted a note re my ancencestors Henry Varcoe and Thomasine Mark. Lavinia Varcoe (Cock) was my Great Great Grandmother and her daughter Mary Hannah married Francis Hall. As families  the Halls, Cocks and Varcoes all seemed to come together to Australia and ultimately the Bendigo Goldfields but the Hall family ended up in Broken Hill in about 1890.

Any info re Henry Varcoe origins in Cornwall would be appreciated

Wendy Henwood

I do not have much on the Varcoes in Cornwall, I'm afraid - though I have a good amount on the Cock/Rich side, if you are interested.
My great grandmother was Mary Jane Cock, Matthew's sister (which makes us 3rd cousins, once removed, I think) - I have attached a picture of Mary Jane taken on Christmas day 1920, at age 82

Below is all I know about the Varcoes right now - though your message encouraged me to send for a copy of Lavinia's birth certificate, which should arrive in a couple of weeks.
(When I looked up Lavinia's birth online, I saw that it was registered in March 1840 in Bodmin. Luxulyan is between Bodmin and Tywardreath, which is where Matthew was born.)

I have very little on Matthew and Lavinia's descendants and would love to to have whatever you are able to share. (I have more on John and Selina's).

Also - there is a researcher in Cornwall who has helped with other branches of the family whom I can contact again. He was able to untangle a change in our family's surname caused by an error by the St Austell parish clerk in 1865 which I probably never would have been able to do. His name is Bob Richards, of Cornwall Family Finders
http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/cornwall-family-finders/Welcome.html)

I grew up knowing very little about my father's family - it has been fascinating to 'meet' relatives/descendants of Cornish miners all over the world. My father taught me to make Cornish pasties as a child and I loved them, but didn't realize the history involved until I started this research.

I am happy to share anything I have  - just keep in mind that some is speculation and I am sure that there are some errors...

Kind regards,

Michelle MacRae (Dec 08)

I am researching te Vercoe family from Cornwall, some emigrating to New Zealand.

Robert Varcoe (Jan 07)

I would like to hear from anyone interested in or having information prior to Charles Stanley VARCOE b 1880 m. Alice Doreas Thompson b. 1881 emigrating to canada (Sault Ste. Marie).

I can also supply information to the Varcoe's of Sault Ste Marie. I am now Married to Margaret (Burke) Varcoe, she has 5 children although we have none together, I am living in Souderton PA

Thank you for putting this board together.

Emily Tucker (Dec 06)

I am desended from Karenhappuch Varcoe (father Jacob Varcoe). She was born in Cornwall, but died in Palmerston North, New Zealand. She lived (I believe) in Moonta, Australia for sometime. Her daughter (Angelina Grigg) was born in Moonta (my great-grandmother). I believe that Karnhappuch was descended from Edward Slade Varcoe. I would love any information on this part of my family tree. (http://emilyjtucker.googlepages.com/georgeburrows)

Peter William Tapley (Sept 06)

I am related to the William Edward Crase who appears on your tree who married Mary Varcoe born 25 / 5 / 1887.

If you are interested William Edward Crase's parents were: Henry CRASE and Elizabeth Ann WATTERS
Henry Born: 8 Feb 1856 Raven Bottom Redruth Cornwall. Was a Miner/Poultry Farmer.

Henry's father was also named Henry CRAZE (notice the change in spelling of surname)!
Henry CRAZE married Elizabeth Ann TURNER
Henry Born: 15 Jul 1828 Illogan Cornwall.
Was a copper miner.

His father was Henry CRAZE also who married Elizabeth PENNA.
Henry born 28 Sep 1800 Illogan
Was a miner also!

His father was Richard CRAZE who married Mary JORDAN unsure of birth dates here.
This is as far as I have been able to trace back.

Lisa Mullins (Aug 06)

My interest with the Varcoe line is through Ann who married Joseph Pedlar. I have only just found Joseph and Ann on my line through the IGI, so although not 100%, am more than pretty certain this is part of my line. I am not a direct descendant, my interest in the Pedlars are from my G Grandmothers sister who married a Richard Neal Pedlar. He would be Joseph and Ann's GG Grandson. His G Grandparents would have been Joseph and Ann's son John who married a Jane Sowden, and his Grandfather (John and Jane's son) was Odediah Pedlar (Martha's brother? ) who married a Ann Morcombe. Richards father was their son John If I am correct then their son John Pedlar married a Dinah Neal. John and Dinah's 1st 2 children were born in St Blazey, their next 5 children (including Richard) were all born in Wales and their last 3 children were born in Farnworth, Bolton, Lancashire, where they eventually stayed! Why they moved from such a beautiful area to end in Bolton, goodness only knows!
I would love to know more about this line, especially the Pedlar side, if you have any more info, I would be very grateful. I am amazed to find that most of this family emigrated abroad, but can't help but wonder why we stayed???!!! Although we did move 4 hundred miles up the road - so to speak!
Please could I also request those who have interest in this line, please update their email addresses. I would love to email directly, but messages are bouncing straight back.

Many Regards

Jim Vincent

My G-Great Grandfather, John Vincent, married Mary Varcoe at St. Just-in-Roseland on 17.8.1841. The marriage certificate gives her father as Philip Varcoe and his profession is, I think, Mason - its not very clear on the copy of the cert.

I cannot see any reference to this branch of the family in your tree, so is this an area you haven't researched? Or have I missed something?

DolorA

I too am looking for VARCOE who married into the ROGERSON line. George VARCO married Mary ROGERSON about 1931.

George's parents are Alfred VARCO and Mary HALL. They married mid 1880's.

Alfred's dad was John. John was from Cornwall, but when they came to CANADA I do not know.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jane Evison

I am primarily researching the Chesterfield family tree from St Ewe, Cornwall and have gone back to 1787 William Vercoe Chesterfield. I am trying to confirm he is a direct ancestor.
Nevertheless his parents were Samuel Chesterfield and Jane Vercoe married in St Ewe in14 January 1781 kindly provided by the Cornwall FHS. So this leads me into the Vercoe tree.

Would like to know more about this Vercoe/Varco connection

Andrea Ferguson nee Varcoe,

My great Aunt is Jean Varcoe and I know my ancestors come form Cornwall and Whales. My Grandmother was a Churchill. I have some information but am very interested to find out more?

Terry Vercoe

Descendant of Thomas (c1841) & Mary J (Janes?) Vercoe (Roche, Cornwall) - son Woodman - Merthyr - John.

I am finding I difficult to gather information beyond the Thomas & Mary generation. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Glenn Perry
Thanks for making that Varcoe site. It's very interesting, expecially
the MIs etc. I'm not directly related to the name but I do have quite
a lot via my tree/website (www.glennperry.co.uk).

The reason I'm asking is half way down (after Robert's will) it says:

"Richard & Jennifer Varcoe lived and farmed at Higher Penrose or
Penrose Vean, St. Dennis about the end of the eighteenth century."
Then 3 children... but this is wrong. The above Richard & Jennifer are
not their parents. Their parents were Robert Varcoe (1763-1818) &
Elizabeth Tretheway (1765-1815).

Tony Ford
A Dora Mabel VARCOE was married in Nov 1897 in Cardiff, Wales to a Frank Davies BADDER; he in turn was a son born in 1865 in Bristol, England to Thomas BADDER and his wife Mary Jane DAVIES.

That Thomas BADDER was one my 2nd great grandfathers!!

Can anyone help me with any information about the ancestry of Thomas BADDER, please, or - even better - that of his wife Mary Jane? I know that Thomas was born in approx 1814 in Bristol and I think he died there in 1878; and Mary Jane his wife was born in approx 1831 in Swansea, Glamorgan (Wales) and seems to have either died or re-married after the 1871 census.

many thanks if anyone can help.

I've had an enquiry from a lady in Melbourne, about a Varcoe relative of
hers.

Susannah Varcoe married John Elvans on 16/4/1874 at St. Dennis. That's
all she knows.

Glen Varcoe

My name is Glen Varcoe, New Zealand. Haven't officially started researching but want to know about my family ancestory. Furtherest back is my grandfather Cyril Ensor Varcoe.

Richard Angwin

I came across the following (below) in the Varcoe Family Tree. There is a reference to the Barque Clio from Padstow to Quebec. My relatives, specifically Richard Angwin and his wife Francis and their family came from Padstow to Quebec in 1841 or 1842.

I’m looking for information to confirm the ship they came across on. I know it’s a long shot … but, does anyone who is researching the Varcoe Family happen to have access to or know of a passenger list for the Barque Clio? Wow, what a find if I could confirm the Angwin’s were on it.

Ryan Hill.

I am aiding an Australian acquaintance in researching her Varcoe ancestry. I have stated below some of the work which we have achieved so far, as I would appreciate anybody who shares an interest with her Varcoe family to contact me immediately!
One John VARCOE m. Susan/Susannah (?) in Cornwall. John and Susan have 6 children all born & christened at LANIVET, CORNWALL. Their names are Robert Henry b. 1832, Susan Elizabeth b. 1831, Alfred b. 1833, Charles Edwin b. 1835, Mary Anne b. 1836 and Ellen Selina b. 1837. Robert Henry later married one Elizabeth PARKER in NSW, AUS, and Charles Edwin married one Jane SAVAGE of Cornwall in SOUTH AUS, AUS.
Thank you!

Pat Cox - nee Varcoe

I am in the process of doing a bit of family research for my side of the Varcoe family. I've got back to 1830 (my great grandfather) with reasonable ease apart from where my g.g.mother was born. Am a bit stuck as to where to start on that but the main problem is my grandparents. I'm awaiting for a birth certificate for my grandmother as she was born on a ship. I've got the ship's name and, hopefully got the right year so I live in hope that it's the right person!! I also have their marriage certificate -she evidently lived in a small village at the time of her marriage - Walter Belchamp in Essex. She got married from my grandfathers church. Her father was a deceased captain on a vessel. I cannot find, after a great deal of searching where and when my grandfather died. I knew nothing about my grandparents (my father never told me and I, apparently, never asked - there is certainly a skeleton or two in the cupboard but that makes it more interesting!.........Have you knowledge of any of these names?
Harry Augustus - or Augustus Harry Varcoe Margaret Ann Varcoe - nee Williams
Alice Varcoe (I seem to think she never married) Henrietta Varcoe Walter Varcoe
or Frederick Varcoe. They all lived quite close to where I'm living now and I've got quite a bit of information from two local libraries - but I' m stuck on Augustus - it intrigues me as to where he went to and also why my father-Felix George- didn't return to his mother's address. after he was born. I have no uncles, siblings, aunts to help bur I live in hope that with all these ramlings you may be able to help...Thanks for reading this in any case.

I am trying to find information on Maryann (Yelland) Varcoe who had a son James Varcoe Trevail in about 1836 in Luxulyan, Cornwall. I think she might have died in childbirth as the banns for her marriage to John Trevail (b1804 in Luxulyan) had been read but no marriage is recorded. It is possible that James Varcoe Trevail emigrated to New York with his wife Jane and young family in the 1870s

I am a Varcoe descendant and have recently become interested in the Varcoe ancestry following a chance conversation with my cousin Ian Varcoe at my sister-in-law’s funeral. I had just discovered entries in a family bible in my mother’s possession which date back to Mary Varcoe and her 10 children in the early 19th century as well as subsequent entries of her descendants.

My Varcoe ancestors are descendants from the House of DeMelza at St Wenn, Cornwall, according to the information I have. The earliest is Edward Varcoe m. Elizabeth abt 1724 and/or Diana. Their great great grandson, Tobius William Varcoe married Fanny (Francis Neil or Nail) and they emmigrated to New Zealand on the 'Fifeshire' abt 1842 and settled in Southland. Then Tobius's brother James Varcoe b. 1843, m. Mary Common and also Jane Tippet, also emmigrated to New Zealand in 1877 on the 'Piako.' and I were surfing the web tonight and found your research. I live in Australia and can help if you need information about the Varcoes aover here. In fact there was a book published in 1988 (or there abouts) that I have which is titled "From Cornwall to the Outback". It traces the migration of the Varcoes in the 1820s.

June Cunliffe, Chacewater, Truro

My interest is in ELIZABETH VARCOE m. RICHARD DEVONSHIRE St Dennis 26 July 1776. Their son Nicholas Devonshire bpt 1777 m. Susanna Trebilcock 1800 St Dennis, their daughter Mary Devonshire bpt 1803 m James BUNT 1822 St Dennis - I was June Bunt before I married and we are friends of John and Monica Bunt of Truro, who gave me your website address. We lived in Sussex for 30 years - Michael was a primary school head and moved home nearly 4 years ago. Couldn't sell after M. retired as we were caught up in the negative equity trap when nothing was selling. Kind regards.

Vaness Varcoe

We have tonight just found you web pages re: the Varcoe's. Just to add, my son, and the end of our line has just celebrated his 21st birthday, Edward James Varcoe only son born 28/08/75 and his father, my husband, is an only son Stewart Allan Varcoe 04/01/48 ( known as Allan) and his father, an only son Arthur Roy Varcoe 29.04.20 (known as Roy), and we all live at 1 & 3, Woodford Road, Glenholt, Plymouth. Roy, had three sisters who are now deceased, Myrtle, Violet and Geraldine, who were brought up in St Cleer, Cornwall. Their father was William Rowden Varcoe, mother, Mary Jane Opie. William had a brother Stanley Varcoe who went to Canada to Sous St Marie. John married Mary Varcoe in 20th July 1793 and their children were, Robert 1794, Richard 1796 (Mariann Gill), Ann 1798, William 1800, James 1803 James 1806 (Mary Ann Yelland 1850), Mary 1809 (Robert Grigg in 1835) Fanny. Richard Varcoe and Mariann Gill's children were James Gill 1831, Richard 1833, William Edward 1835, Jemina 1838, Absalom (Emma Jane Moss in Ballarat Australia) 1839 Louisa 1844, Sarah Ann 1844 (John Moss in Ballarat). Mary Ann 1846. Theresa 1848 (William Moss in Ballarat 1870) Descendants of William Moss and Theresa Varcoe are Richard Ernest, Thirzsa Emma, Mary Victoria ( 9th May 1875) Alice May, William Herbert George. Looking for relatives of Mary Ann Varcoe b 1837 Tywardreath, Cornwall d 1929 Winifrede, West Virginia and Philip Reed b 1835 Crowan, Cornwall d 1910 Winifrede, West Virginia. I have lovely portraits of this couple, done during their stay in Dalton-in-Furness, which I would be happy to share copies of with any descendants.

Jim Best

I have a small family chart that was sent to my by a Mrs Pat Penhaulick, 10 Treseders Gardens, Truro, TR1 1TR sometime ago with a Thomas Best marr to Ann Varcoe 16 Oct 1698. I also have a reference from a Mrs Joy Hadfield of Clinton Villa, Trevarth, Redruth, TR16 6AQ which lists one of her forebears, James Best, b 1787 and married a Ann Varcoe. Both Joy and I are descended from Thomas Best and Mary James. I am then descended from their son, Thomas Best/Jenefer Trethewey to their son, Thomas Best and Grace Tucker to their son, John Best and Jane Symons, who were my Great Grand Parents. Grace Tucker was also related to the Trethewey's through her Mother Ann Tregenza. I have another family on my computer, commencing with John Best/Mary Phillips, their son Abraham Best/Temperance Stephens, their son, Abraham Best/Jane Snell etc.etc I believe that both families are related, as both lived on Menmunday Farm, Nanpean, St Stephens in Br. I am still seeking the connection, but suspect that the Thomas Best (Wife, Mary James) may be a son of John Best and Mary Phillips. There is another lady who also may have VARCOE in her forebears, a Ms Rosemary Beyson, 72 Hollies Avenue, West Byfleet, Surrey, KT14 6AN. From memory, I also vaguely remember a Ms Rosemary Grigg having a Varcoe in her forebears. Pat Penhaulick would be able to give you her address, as I put her in touch with Rosemary Grigg sometime ago when I saw a connection between all their families.. Could you PLEASE advise, if you have any BEST'S in your Family Tree research that may connect into my own family. I have 2663 Best's or their descendants on computer from every State of Australia, New Zealand, Cornwall, USA and Canada. (From both family groups)

Gale Roy

I would like to correspond and share information with any Varcoe descendants, mainly ones from the St. Dennis area. Also anyone interested/related to this family.

Mike Trebilcock

I am researching the Trebilcock name and tree. I have many Varcoes from Cornwall and Australia which may be of interest. My website

Michael Lightfoot

I am interested in my GGGM Grace Vercoe who was born in 1831 or thereabouts (all I have so far is that she was 25 when she arrived in Sydney NSW) and married John Lightfoot of St Breock in perhaps 1855 just before emigrating to Australia in September 1855. I assume that Vercoe is a variant of Varcoe from some of the other listings you have.

Arthur French

My wife, children, and grandchildren are direct descendants of William VARCOE and his daughter Elizabeth (St Dennis 1753). Elizabeth married Richard TRETHEWEY, a shoemaker from St Stephen who moved to Germoe and died there 1818. I have 458 of Elizabeth's descendants, and 214 of their spouses. Would you like a descendants chart (or a GEDCOM)? Robert VARCOE and Elizabeth TRETHEWEY (m 1796) also link up on the TRETHEWEY side somehow.

Mark Watson

I'm looking on behalf of my father in law, whose name is Higman ... in 1828 Nicholas Higman of Roche married Mary Ann Varcoe (1800-1875), wondered if anyone has any information on her and her family ... Thanks Mark Watson

You are probably aware that the Millicent National Trust Museum features the Varcoe family, although our Riverina branch remains scattered and there is a risk of our losing track of that period in Australian history if our generation fails to do anything about it.

The story of the McKenzies, Varcoes and Nixons who trekked up into the dry country during the 1870-80s is as important part of pioneering Australia, not merely as a family thing among ourselves.

As time goes by, apart from having a gedcom available we may also be able to track down some of the heirlooms and other material dating from that period.

So, that is the reason I have proposed a Varcoe gedcom, and I hope as we go along to construct an Australian Varcoe website.

Apart from information, as time goes by I will be asking for photos of people and places, heirlooms, artifacts, and anything else we feel to be an important part of the story. Any of that material can be scanned and an electronic archive maintained as well as a web site.
