Having attended Bedford Physical Training College, she met up with Arthur, the son of the Rev. John Arthur Hickman of St.Keyn, Cornwall, when he was in England attending a small arms college at Hythe. They were married and Arthur went on to become Commissioner of the BSA Police, in what was then Rhodesia, (On his returement, in 1954, he was offered the post of Chief Constable of Cornwall but could not persuade his family, us, to give up the sun).
(1)Lt.Gen. John Selwin Varcoe HICKMAN who married 1st Jacqueline Marcia BATES, the second daughter of Dr. and Mrs Bates (At one time the mayor of Salisbury, Rhodesia). They had two sons, Richard and David Hickman. Richard, a member of the SAS, died as a result of injuries sustained in the liberation war; David is married, has two sons and is currently employed and resident in Thailand where he is involved in the tobacco business. He later married Anthea (PARTRIDGE), widow of the late Joe Partridge, a well known international cricket player. Both are still alive and resident in Zimbabwe.
(2) Major Michael Laurence Varcoe HICKMAN - Married to Deirdre EDDINGTON of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. They had two offspring, Peter and Angela. Peter died, aged 19 as a result of a road accident and Angela bore a son Jonathan HICKMAN who would now be about 14 years of age. Michael was Brigade Major in both the Rhodesian and Zimbabwean National Armies, based in Matabeleland. He was also killed in a RTAccident in 1995. Angela is resident in Pretoria RSA.
(3) Jennifer Marion Varcoe HICKMAN married John DALE (who was at Gordonston School with Prince Charles). They had Sandra and Warren. Sandra recently married (1996) and Warren is resident in Pietermaritzberg, Natal, RSA. John Dale passed away shortly after his daughter's wedding and Jennifer is now resident at St.Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, RSA.
(4) Jeremy Alexander Varcoe HICKMAN (b 27/07/1944), married Margaret Eileen (BRADFIELD), Decended from the 1820 settlers of South Africa. Married in 1970 and have one daughter CAROLINE, born in 1974. In keeping with the family tradition, I was an Inspector in the BSAPolice. Still married, my wife and I are resident in Harare, Zimbabwe as are our daughter and her husband James BION. Mary died 18-Jun-1850, Cornwall. Sad times when children left Cornwall. Letter written 1847 states Mary & Joseph were having thoughts of going to America, Mary coaxing her sister Selina to give serious consideration of accompanying them there, Selina was unmarried & seems to have had trouble with her eyes. They never got to America both died in Cornwall. Joseph: 1841 lived in Ladock with 4 children and a farmer. Times were desperate & many family members & relatives were migrating especially to America, also New Zealand & Australia. April 1847 son Samuel & Mary's brother John Hicks Varcoe sailed to America. Joseph & Mary might have had another son who died. 1848 Joseph aged 58 found work at Newlyn as a skilled farm worker who lived on the job Mon am - Sat pm. Witness at wedding W Edward Blake.

The next year she commenced teaching school and became herself an accomplished musician also giving music lessons out of school hours, sometimes walking long distances to do so. She succeeded solely thro' her own efforts in earning enough to pay her own way, clothe herself, & give freely to charitable purposes & saved enough to buy herself her own piano. Father left farm of 115 acres-had been rented for 10 year but as Franklin so young Mrs Varcoes parents kindly offered her and her children a home, which they accepted. Aged 15 went with mother & worked on farm looking after sheep, cattle, horses etc in summer & going to school in winter. Became too advanced for district school & used to rise at 5am, care for stock & drive 4 miles to Honesdale to school. Studied til 11pm every night.1894 went & became clerk to Mr Estelle
