- Extract from The Times - 9th September 1868
On Monday August 31st, a sad occurrence took place on the beach off
the ness Point at Lowestoft. Mr Downing Sones, son of Mrs Sones, 120
High Street, was on a visit to his mother and went on the North
beach to bathe. He was seen by Mr George Benny, the keeper of the
Low Lighthouse , to strip and dive into the water, and shortly after
he heard a cry for assistance. Before, however, this could be
rendered he was lost to view; he was washed out to sea and his body
was found six days after, about five miles from the spot where he
lost his life. The deceased was 28 years of age, and had a wife and
two children. He was well known as an affectionate father, a dutiful
son and a most honourable man. For some years he had been employed
in London, in connection with the West Central District Post Office,
which position he honourably filled to the time of his untimely
death.
