Julie (Aug 12)

I think your research may be linked to my husband's family.  His grandfather was Oliver Charles Reeve, son of Alice Reeve.  He was born at North Lopham in 1906.  Alice stated in the 1911 Census that she was born at Winfarthing.  She is shown as the unmarried stepdaughter of William Rush but appears to have several children including Oliver Charles.  He married Daisy Abel in 1929 but died tragically young in C. 1933.  They seem to have moved between Kenninghall, North Lopham and Winfarthing.  In the Census records for 1881 and before, they were at Winfarthing.   I wonder if you have connections with this family.  I am now desperate to look through the parish registers.  Unfortunately, this will take time to organise.  I should have some access on-line organised soon.

Stella Scott (Nee REEVES) (Aug 12)

I hope you can help, I am trying to research :

Thomas Reeve born 1735 in Ashford, Kent, England, brother of Ambrose Reeve. I believeThomas Reeve died in Charlton near Dover, Kent England in July 1816.

Unfortunately I am unable to identify his parentage and wonder if anyone out there can help.

I descend from the line of marriage with Sarah Huntley and their son Lewis (1773) and can provide details of the family line from there.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Jennifer Fildes (Feb 12)

I am trying to find information on my elusive gr.gr.grandfather..John Reeve/s.

He was convicted in 1847, possibly Birmingham, and was sent to Australia in 1848, arriving in  Australia 1849 and was pardoned. His punishment was originally 7 yrs.
He met/married (?) my gr.gr. grandmother, Mary Ann Cornell ( she was 14yrs) in 1854. John was about 34yrs! ( met in the Portland area of Western Victoria)

Their first child was stillborn(1855) their second , John, was born in 1857, and their third, George (my gr. grandfather) was born in 1858.
On the birth cert. for George it shows that the father, John Reeve/s was 38yrs and born in Cambridge, UK.

After the birth of George, John disappeared, never heard from again!!

Eric Craig Reeves. (Sept 11)

I now live in West Yorkshire, but spent most of my life in mid-Gloucestershire. I was originally born (1954) in St Helier Hospital, Carshalton ,Surrey. I am the illegitimate son of Basil Vincent Reeves. I also have a brother 2 years younger than me  (also believed to be his son) called Julian Alexander Charles Reeves. Basil was previously married to Ann or Anne (maiden name unknown) and had 2 children, Jeanette and Paul. They then lived in Abinger Hammer, Surrey. This is where he began an affair with my mother Gladys Abery (maiden name Craigmyle).

I have always been told that his family came from Birmingham and the Warwickshire area. He was the only son but had 5 sisters. I believe his father was a stock broker. At the start of the 2nd World War, Basil must have trained with the RAF, I have his old notebooks on aircraft construction and design (biplanes), also some old books on wireless and telegraphy. I was told that his main war effort (while I believe he was still attached to the RAF) was at a secret establishment called Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk, where he worked assisting one of the scientists on the top secret project of developing radar with Robert Watson Watt. Bawdsey (RAF Bawdsey) became the first place to build the Chain Home Radar Station, these were eventually linked up around the South and East coast of Britain to detect incoming enemy aircraft. I believe later he became more involved in the rapid setting up of these stations  and calibrating the receiver stations. Later, after the war he worked for Kearsley Airways, the first commercial airline set up at Stanstead in 1947, flying DC3’s , carrying cargo and passengers all over the world. Kearsley Airways are still at Stanstead Airport, doing aircraft repairs both civilian and military (they specialized in the increasing Comet fleets). Go to a web site Stanstead Consultative Committee ‘Stanstead the Early Years (1942-1966), scroll down to The First Airlines and you will see a photo of the 1st of three DC3’s they started with.

He met my mother later, while working for a company that revived failing post-war businesses. He was making a hash of sorting out a pet shop when my mother came in (she used to breed birds). My mother had made her own income during the 2nd World War, buying and selling property around central London (despite her losses during the Blitz) and later as the manageress of the Greyhound Hotel in Carshalton. Although my brother and I were believed to be his, the name Reeves does not appear on my birth certificate (my surname is given as Abery after my mothers husband Harry Abery), my brothers birth certificate reads Julian, Alexander, Charles, Reeves, Abery. This was despite the fact that we were still living with Harry Abery. Although my mother would never tell me who exactly my father was, I believe Harry couldn’t have children (despite the 2 of us she fostered another 7 children) and my mother took matters into her own hands so to speak. Eventually my mother and Basil left there respective partners and became tenants of a public house called The Forest Inn at Holt Pound on the A325 Farnham to Alton road in Hampshire. Eventually the business failed and my brother was sent to live with friends near Reading and the 3 of us lived in a caravan in the grounds of a condemned (later demolished) house. My mother decided to return to her early employment of cook/housekeeper.

They both took a position as housekeeper and estate maintenance engineer at the 1000,acre Saddlewood Manor Estate, Nr Leighterton, Gloucestershire, next to the Duke of Beaufort Estate at Badminton. They were employed by Colonel and Mrs Oxley (the family are well known in both horse breeding/training and television). After about 5 years, tensions began to build because Basil was increasingly asked to do a butlers role as well. Eventually they left service and moved to nearby Wotton-under-Edge, on the edge of the Cotswolds. After a few more years they decided to split up and Basil rented a little asbestos and timber shack in a nearby village of North Nibley at a place called Pitt Court. Disinherited from his families estate because of his relationship with my mother, he lived a frugal life. He worked for a while for Mawdsleys as a time and motion study man and then after having to have part of his intestines removed due to cancer, did not return to full time work. he repaired the odd television, radio or even watch for people.

In 1975 I was due to start teacher training college in Buckinghamshire as an Art and Design teacher. Early that summer a young woman visited Basil. This woman turned out to be Jeanette Reeves, his daughter, who I had never met before and she had not seen her father since he left when she was young. The first thing I noticed was the incredible close resemblance we both had. She came back later that summer as promised, for a longer stay. We talked and talked, the more we talked the more we both realised what similar career paths, lives and emotions we had experienced separately. Jeanette was head of the Art department at Brune Park Comprehensive School in Gosport, Hampshire (then the second largest in the country). As the summer holiday moved into early August, Jeanette invited me down to her home in Lee on Solent for a few days. While down there, Jeanette had a phone call to say that Basil had suffered 2 heart attacks, one after the other and later in Intensive Care he had another and died before we could drive up to see him. On reflection, it seemed that Jeanette and I meeting was perhaps some kind of closure on his life, as though things had come full circle. Basil was cremated, his ashes were buried at North Nibley Parish Church. At the funeral I met Paul who was now married and living in Norway, we were like identical twins. Jeanette drove me to college (I was now 2 weeks late starting), I never saw or heard from either of them again.

I hope at least part of this will be of some use to you. Please feel free to share this with other members of the Reeves family.

Barb Reaves Nelson (Aug11)

I would very much like to submit my data for your site.  I have 10 years of research in South Carolina Reaves/Reeves and still cannot get further back than GGGF.  Any help is appreciated and needed.

My GGGF was ASA REAVES b. in SC according to census.  I don’t have his parentage. His spouse was Clarinda (unk).  They had a large family in Pickens, SC, one son who was my GGF, HIRAM REAVES?REEVES (both spellings). Hiram and a brother, John, served in the Civil War as well as a brother, ASA, who was killed at Rappahannock in the bloodiest battle of the war.  Hiram’s son, William Jackson, was my GF.  His son, Jesse Pearley, was my father.  Hiram’s had two spouses: Emaline Youngblood and Lydia Powell.  They are buried at the homeplace in Pickens at Eastatoe (sp?).  I cannot find out anything further and have been working on this for years.  I am hopeful that our ancestors may have crossed paths and that you will have some of the names in your research.

Claire Moore (May 11)

I'm looking for anyone who knows of a gentleman named Samuel William Reeve. All I know is he married in India approx. 1945-1946, to a wonderful lady named Gertrude Mary (nee Monsurate).  They moved to Wales around 1946 as this was the yr. they had a son.  He was in the navy stationed there. I believe, in 1947-1948 they moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and there they had a daughter (my mother) and don't know why or what happened but they split up, there was no contact from there on.  We have no photos or anymore information.  My family in India tell my mum she looks just like her father in which they called him Bill.

Thank u for taking the time to read this and any information would be great.

I'm desperately trying to research the family of famous country music singer Jim Reeves.  I have determined that his father Thomas Middleton Reeves was born 12th Nov. 1882 and died 21st May 1924.  His grandfather was a William J. Any help or advice you can give a 67 year old Englishman in this matter will be oh so graciously received.

Many thanks in eager anticipation.

Can you tell me if this was the Margaret who was the daughter of James Reeve and Elizabeth Phillips please?  I thought she was but then saw a will on NOAH for James Reeve which stated his daughter Margaret was the wife of a Blomfield not Bilham.  I have searched and searched for another baptism for Margaret Reeve but to no avail.

R. Wayne Wolsey. (May 08)

I am a descendent through my mother of the Reeves family that settled in Southhold, Long Island, NY. What is now called Peconic Bay was once called Reeves Bay. Being Torys they moved back to England during the American Revolution and returned after the war around 1803. My 3rd Great Grandfather R. Theodore Reeves and his 2 sons were owners of a shipping company along with Grover Cleveland and his brother. They established a thriving business bringing spices and rum from the Carribean and exported goods from NY to England. R. Theodore Reeves was born 1818 in NYC and his son William Theodore Reeves was born in NYC 1840 and died 1906. My siblings and I are the last known descendents from William Theodore living. He was married twice with 1st ending in divorce. We are descended from the 2nd wife. I would like to know if there are any descendents of the 1st wife as my family has handed down to me silverware and artifacts from the 1700-1800's from England. I have a silverware set from the late 1700's engraved with the Reeves name and mfg by Joseph Rogers and Sons Cutlers to His Majesty. I also have a tin type photo album of the Reeves family circa 1860. If you are descended from the original Long Island Reeves family from Southhold, Long Island, NY then please contact me as it would be nice to fill in the blanks.

Heather Starr (Feb 08)

My Grand mother got this large old bible from somewhere, I don't know when or where. It has been here since I was very little, probably even before. It is about 16" x 9.50" black with a very nice blank embossing ( no color). In the back there is a "Family register" page. And it has the name of "Reeve". So I hopped on the internet and started looking for the names that are in it. (dates too). I am not sure how to go about looking fully for the persons listed in the back. In short I am winging it, and thought you might be able to help me. I have no Reeve in my family background, that is how I know that it does not belong here, I would like to find its family. It is an approx. 1851 version of the holy bible, with the above dimentions and about 3" thick. I can give you the names in the back of the bible:
Benjamin,
Elizabeth Isabella Reeve.
Married July 5th 1850.
John Reeve Born March 21st.1837.
Elizabeth Reeve Born Sept. 4th 1853.
Benjamin Reeve Born August 30th 1855.
Frank Reeve born Dec. 29th 1856.
Alfred Reeve born Dec, 1st. 1858.
Died Feb. 25th 1859.
Alfred Reeve born Feb.12th 1860.
Eliza Reeve born August 7th 1862.
Died Sept. 5th 1863.
Eliza Reeve born Nov. 5/6th 1863.
Frederick Reeve born April 3rd 1866.
Isabella Reeve born (looks like) Dec. 23rd 1869.
As you can read the only ones that I have trouble reading are the 2nd Eliza & last Isabella. As I said before I would like to find the persons that this might belong to now and see if they would like it. I love old books, and try to find who they belonged to. But this is beyond me. As before any help would be great.

Rachel Fieldhouse (Reeves) (Oct 07)

I am trying to find out what happened to my grandfather Ernest Arthur Reeves 1902 sisters and brother,

Evelyn May Reeves born in Cheltenham in June 1905 who I think may have possibly married a Walter Rankmore in Bristol 1923. Walter died in 1930 and after this I loose what happened to Evelyn.

Herbert Jesse Reeves born in Frome in 1909. I have him on Uley National School records but can not find a marriage etc for him.

Also Lillian Maud Reeves born in Uley near Dursley in 1917. I have traced her on school records at Uley National school but I am unable to find a marriage or any thing else for her.

My Grandfathers family is a bit of a mystery to my family and it would be wonderful to find out more information.

Ged and Joan Barry (Sept 07)

I am researching the family of Philip Reeves born Egham UK 17th June, 1787 parents John and Elizabeth. Philip married Sarah Eames at St.Martin’s Church     Birmingham 1814. Dawn (Reeves) Hass (Jan 07)

I just recently found an obituary for my 3rd generation grandfather William J. Reeves.

Here is what I know about William J. Reeves, I'm hoping you can tell me more about his parents and/or siblings.

William J. Reeves was born in Devonshire England, March 28, 1826 and died in Hull, Wisconsin (Marathon County WI USA) October 09, 1888. At eleven years of age William Reeves, left his home in Devonshire, England to begin his life as a seaman. He was a seaman for over eleven years. Then, moved to Marquette County, Wisconsin in 1848 and began farming (Marquette County Census, 1855). 3 In December, he married Eliza Griffin. The Colby Memorial Cemetery records state they were married April 20, 1857. 5 In the 1870 census, they were living in Mecan, WI. 3 Mecan is located in the central part of Wisconsin with the cities of Oxford on the west and Green Lake on the east. As stated in the Montello News Express 1875, William Reeves was elected as county board member for Mecan, Wisconsin.

In 1877, the family moved to Colby, WI. Eliza left Colby WI around 1902 and finally settled in Edgemont, SD where she died April 20, 1919. Her body was brought back to Colby WI and buried with her husband William. Both William and Eliza are buried in the Colby Memorial Cemetery in Colby WI. 5

At the time of Eliza’s death, her son William was living in Lake Bay, Washington, Henry A. was in Colby, Wisconsin, while John E. was living in Belleham, Washington. John lived in Bath Dakota around 1888. Henry married Catherine Waterpohl in Colby WI. At this point, no further information has been uncovered for John E. and William.

Do you have information that can offer more info on William's siblings, children, family in devonshire england ? Any info., suggestions are appreciated.

REEVE - Garboldisham families

I have been asked to give my 'take' on the descendants of the descendants of Righteous REEVE, born Diss c. 1801, died North Lopham 1869, through his son William (1835 in North Lopham). Thereafter I have more than one interpretation of the children born in Garboldisham and would be grateful for your views on these please. Nancy Silvernail

Doris Irene Medlicott, born 11/10/1914 in Melbourne, Richmond, Victoria, Australia. At some point, she married a John Reeves in Melbourne. They had two daughters whose names I do not have. We only learned of this 1st marriage after her death. The story we were told is that she met Kasper Silvernail (a US Marine) in Australia where he was recovering from malaria. They fell in love and had a brief affair which resulted in a pregnancy. We have no idea when Kasper learned of this. Paul Reeves was born in 1944. There is no Father listed on the birth certificate. We assume that John and Doris divorced sometime between Paul's birth, 1944, and their emigrating to the US in 1947. She was listed as Doris Meddlicott on hers' and Kaspers' marriage certificate. The marriage took place in Minneapolis in January of 1947. Paul eventually became Paul Silvernail but there are no adoption papers. Doris and Kasper had two more sons; Dennis (my husband) and Michael (1952-2005). Sadly, Kasper died very young in 1957.
***********************************************************************************************************************

I now know that his name was JAMES REEVES and that he was born abt 1911 in Bendigo of William Reeves and Elsie Alexander. He married Doris on January 26th, 1935 at St Ignatious Catholic Church in Richmond. At the time of their marriage, he lived at 2 Cubitt St. in Richmond and was listed as a labourer. Doris lived at Hornby St in Beaumaris and was listed as a waitress.

So far, my search for the births of their daughters or for a divorce record have been fruitless. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated!

Mary Blathwayt

My great grandfather was Benjamin Reeve b 1836 in Silfield (Norfolk)

He was married three times. I only have any knowledge of two of these marriages.

He married Sophia (Claxton?) 1841 - 1872 in Kenninghall in 186?
They had
William Reeve b 1865 in Kenninghall (died young in Ipswich)
Benjamin Reeve b 1868 in Kenninghall (moved to Devon)
Edith Reeve b 1869 in Kenninghall (married George Kingsland in the London area)

After Sophia died Benjamin appears to have moved to Long Stratton (otherwise known as Stratton St Mary)
He married Hannah Howell Blowers in 1878 and they had
Florence Martha b 1878 (married William Palmer and died at their home in Weymouth)
Rosa Ann b 1881 (my grandmother) (married Arnold Plummer who died young in 1914 in Long Stratton)
Samuel b 1884
Charles b 1886 d 1876 (born disabled)

Benjamin is also reputed to have been married to a Miss Burrows who, family legend has it, "died of a tapeworm."

I would love to know more about Benjamin's family and also if Miss Burrows ever existed.

Benjamin was a wheelwright but later describes himself as an "agricultural engineer." He had a blacksmith's and wheelwright's business in Long Stratton.

Allen Reeves

Marvin ? Reeves, senior, of Lynnville, Tennessee.
Rumor has it that he and wife Mattie Reeves (?maiden name unknown) came from other Reeves descendents that had gone to Texax in 1800's through Tennessee, and that he was one of several that had returned to this area in the south.

He had 5 children, three sons (1 died at age 3 of blood poisoning from farm accident) and four daughters.
Sons names were Jesse Allen Reeves and Marvin ? Reeves, Jr.
Daughters names were Katherin ? Reeves, Helen ? Reeves, Jean ? Reeves, and Jewel ? Reeves. I can get the middle names of all if necessary.

Jesse Allen Reeves married a Mildred Levonia Bradley (also of British Anglo-Saxon? descent) and they had one son, Allen Bradley Reeves.

Allen Bradley Reeves had two sons, Bradley Allen Reeves and Mark Allen Reeves (all still alive) who live in the Nashville, Tennessee area.

I am very interested in tracing the lineage of the Reeves family name from Marvin senior above as far back as possible and to add to the Reeve, Reeves tree of heritage knowledge in as much as possible.

Thanks to any and all that respond.

Allen Bradley Reeves, DoD physicist retired.

parents maybe Daniel b 1754 in SC died 1838 Smith Co, Tenn. m to Eleanor b 1`758

Asa married his first wife Annie (Anna) Ferguson daughter of William and Mourning Ferguson in SC William was the son of William E, known as William of Fairfield and Anna Henderson. They were living in SC in 1828. He "went security" for a man's note and had to pay it. An altercation devoloped resulting in Asa shooting the man and killing him. He was put in jail and his wife somehow turned him out, whereupon he fled to Jackson Co., Tn. Annie sold thier property, except for a few slaves, and with her small children and the slaves set out for Tn to join her husband in a six horse wagon. Annie became ill after exposure crossing a swollen stream and died. After his children arrived he married Mar y "Polly " Moore abt 1830 and became the father of 11 more children. You mention that Margaret's father Henry left her her mother's china and trunk. Were other brothers and sisters mentioned in the will? I thought maybe that would give some clue for me as to which family Mary belonged to.

I am interested in the Reeve family who were based in the Guiltcross registration district - ie South Norfolk - Roydon, Winfarthing and Kenninghall. Thomas Reeve married Rebecca Alderton in Winfarthing around 1820. They had 3 children whom I am aware of - Mary Ann, Ellen and John - born between 1824 and 1830. Mary Ann was unmarried but had four children - Emma, Walter, Edward and Arthur born between 1849 and 1860. Emma, also unmarried, had six children - Victoria (b 1887), Walter (b 1870), Alice (b 1880), Louisa (b 1882), George (b1874) and Eliza (b1875). Emma married William Rush in Kenninghall in 1891.

Could you add my REEVES GENEALOGY PAGES to your list. It contains the Origins of the REEVE name and variants. Useful Addresses and a rogues gallery of Reeves photographs and from time to time documents. My own research starts around 1740 with Peter Reeve of Troston, Suffolk, through to Robert George Reeve's of Grimsby Lincs. I would particularly like to know the whereabouts of Robert Reeve/s Royal Marine/ag lab and his wife ELIZA in 1851 Also his parents who should have been in Troston village Robert and Sarah,Shepherds

Jana Black

Ellen Elizabeth Reeves is the daughter of John REEVES and Susan DANIELS (nee Green) b. 14 April 1856 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, London, England. She died 5 June 1895, Islington, London, England (age ~ 39) of an infected tooth when my grandfather was barely 7 mos. old; leaving my great grandfather a widower with 7 children (one twin had died at the age of 10 months). William James Dewhurst (iron worker) m. Ellen Elizabeth Reeves (spinster) 25 December 1874, Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Middlesex, London. His address was 35 Robert (?) Pl. (illegible); father's name is William Henry Dewhurst (police constable to the Metropolitan Police Force - this info is collaborated on Wm. Jms. birth records). Her address was 5 Brittannia Gardens; father's name John Reeves (baker), she is listed as a minor. The witnesses names are illegible, unfortunately. Research indicates Susan Daniels, b. betw. 1823-26, Hackney/Shoreditch, Middlesex, London England was first married to Samuel Green with whom she had her first son, Charles William Green on 26 October 1845, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, London, England Chr: St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, London, England. Samuel must have died abt. 1848 (unless they divorced) as Susannah Reeves was born in 1849 and John Reeves and Susannah Green nee Daniels married in 1850. In the 1861 Census, Charles is listed with the surname Daniels, so he was apparently adopted by John Reeves.

M. Reeves

I have a family tree that, if accurate, traces my ancestory back to Thomas Reeves who inherited a manor in Charles County, Maryland from his father, Upgate Reeves.  Thomas is thought to have arrived at Annapolis, Md. in 1725. I am interested in hearing about  the ancestory of Upgate Reeves.

Kate Reeves

My husband is descended from Edward Reeves, said to have been born at Portarlington, Ireland, on November 11, 1822, son of Edward Reeves, said to have been born in England, and an unknown mother, said to have been born in Scotland.
Edward Reeves emigrated through Philadelphia to Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, sometime prior to 1850.  He married first Maria Dempsy, of Portarlington, but we are unsure whether he was married in Ireland or in America.  She died shortly after the birth of their only child, Richard Robert Reeves, my husband's great-grandfather.  Edward then married Grace Dempsy, Maria's younger sister.  They had four more children, Maria, Lillian, Sarah and Edward L.
We have been unable to trace Edward in Ireland--obviously the name is not Irish.  We were in Portarlington in 1984--no trace there, but of course lots of Dempsy/Dempseys.
ANY direction anyone can give me concerning this mysterious family would be
most appreciated!  Thank you so much!

Kate please let me know your new address and email. Ronnie Matthews has lots of info for you

I live in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. My great great grandfather was Thomas Alfred Reeves and he was born in Kent County, England in 1840. I have traced our family tree from Thomas to our current family but would like to go further back.

Brian Blackwell

My maternal grandmother was Kate Reeves, born I April 1875, in Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, a beautiful village just a three mile walk along the canal from Banbury ( Oxfordshire ).I have traced this Reeves line from Kings Sutton via Brill in Buckinghamshire, to Henry Reeve born  in Launton, Oxfordshire, circa 1688.

Shari Whalen,

researching Reeves relatives, as Reeves is my maiden name.  My branch of the family goes back to William Reeves, Sr. who was a plantation owner in Orange County, North Carolina, USA--probably born in the USA in the early 1700s, exact date is unknown.  His son, William Reves, Jr.was born in 1740 and lived in Wake Country, North Carolina and died in 1821 in Madison County, Kentucky.  I am trying to connect the father--William Reeves, Sr.--to a George, Robert, John or Timothy Reeves of Virginia and then back to Timothy Rives of Oxford, England.  If anyone has information on this line, Iwould be interested in sharing more details.  It might be that William Reeves does not connect to this line at all, but I think he might. Thanks!

D Reeves

I am a descendant (ggrandson) of Theodore Bell Reeves and Mary Malinda Freeman, who were married in October, 1890. I believe my Reeves lineage traces back from Theodore to John Clark Reeves, (b. august 23, 1812) to John C.Reeves of Maryland, whose father was one John, ( b. 1735) whose father was Thomas (b 1706) whose father was Upgate (b 1689, and whom we have an idication of "signing papers to King of England"). Upgate's father was Thomas, born 1645.If you have information that can support or add to this information, I would like to hear from you and share what I have as well.

Looking for Reeves family originating in Tipperary, Ireland. The earliest family member I have is William Frances(?) It indicates a HOH William A with wife Sarah. There are 6 children, William A b 1882.
