ASSAULTING A CONSTABLE; Thomas Howe, labourer, Felsham and John Hoddy, labourer of the same place, were charged with assaulting PC Barnard on the 15th inst in the execution of his duty. - Howe pleaded not guilty. Hoddy said he was tipsy at the time and did not recollect what happened. - PC Barnard said " On Saturday night last about 10 o'clock I heard a great disturbance at Felsham Bells and went there and found Howe stripped and another man who is not present. Howe went away art my request. I went into the house where I heard a noise and saw Hoddy. He was very drunk and threatened to break somebodies neck. I asked him to go away quietly and he said he would not be pulled about by ant policeman and he struck me a violent blow on the head with a stick which partly stunned me. My head was very much swollen the next day. I closed with him and threw him down, and when i recovered strength a little i got one handcuff on him. Somebody then hit me with a blow on the hip. Directly after a stone came. I saw Howe who had returned throw a stone which hit me on the head. He then kicked me on the side. I released myself from Hoddy and struck Howe several times on the arm with my staff." - Howe;" you hit me on the head" - Witness; "Possibly I did. When I left Howe again Hoddy hit me on the head with the handcuff. Hoddy knocked my hat off". Howe acknowledged that he threw a stone at the policeman but denied having kicked him. - The bench Sentenced the prisoners to two months hard labour, the chairman remarking that it was only by Gods mercy that the blow did not kill the Policeman.
