I also have Doney ancestors but they have been very elusive. I recently found the marriage of my ancestors Samuel Doney b.c.1797-1803 and Joanna Folland b.c.1800-5. They married in the parish of Buckland Monochorum in Devon on 2/6/1821. Before they emigrated to South Australia in 1840 they listed their place of residence as Clastock, Cornwall. They had at least 6 children between 1825-1839 according to the shipping register but I am as yet unable to pinpoint any of the childrens births or baptism dates. Unfortunately that is where my research stops. Have you in your research came across any reference to Doney's living on the other side of the Tamar(the parish of Buckland Monochorum in Devon is between Calstock and Tavistock) or anyone else researching Doney's from that area of Devon and Cornwall??
46. Karen Baker (Please update your email address).
(nee Doney). I have always been interested in family trees, and always believed that because I had an unusual name, it might be quite simple to investigate, but after looking at your home page I'm not so sure. I live in Queensland Australia, but only came here about 9 years ago. Most of my family live in and around Burnley which you may know is in Lancashire. I have always been led to believe that my ancestors were originally tin miners in Cornwall, and that they came north to Burnley in Lancashire to mine the coal. My grandfathers name was William Doney and my father is John Brian Doney.
47. Jean Pearce (nee Doney)

49. William Chilton
SMITH, John born 04 December 1815 m DONEY, Elizabeth born 02 November 1820 My great great grandmother's name appeared twice on the 1901 Federal Census of Canada. I believe them to be from the baptism registers from the parish church of North Hill (Northill) shows the baptism on 05 March 1820 of an "Elizabeth DONEY, the daughter of James DONEY, blacksmith of Congdon's Shop". This "information" agrees with that given on her marriage registration.
I am researching my great-grandmother. Her name is Catherine Jane Trivine Doney she was born I believe Feb, 7, 1871 .
She married William Henry Parker but I am not sure of the date. I believe she was born in Cornwall, England and I would like to trace her roots.

My line seems to stem from Richard GUMMOE and either Jane or Jenifer WEBB. Prior to that it goes back to a different spelling, GUMMA.
And there are Richard GUMMA'S going back to 1650 or so. All of the other names other than GUMMA and GUMMOE are surnames of women who married GUMMOE men. That would also include Rebecca FLAMANK/FLAMONK. Earliest was a Joane HARRIS who married Richard GUMMA.Pam Lee
My grandfather Thomas Gummoe was married to Dessie Swingle, they lived in the Honesdale area, but my grandmother died when my father was very young and my grandfather remarried a woman named Thomas. My father married Helen Patterson, whose family emigrated from England in the early 1900s and lived in Jermyn PA. Many of the gummoes are buried in the Aldenville PA cemetary. One reason for my trip to PA this summer is to go to the Aldenville cemetary and try to trace back some of the Gummoes. I will let you know. I know this side of the Gummoe family also was intermarried with a lot of the Reynolds family as we used to go to the Gummoe Reynolds reunion. I will keep you posted as I learn more. Gummoe spelled this way is an unusual name so we must all be related somehow.

97 Roger Donne
I have an ancestor James Donne whose birthplace is recorded as Crowan, Cornwall in the 1851 census. I notice from your genealogy web pages that you have equated Doney with Donne and traced a marriage between Richard Doney/Donne and Elizabeth Floyd in Crowan, 1764. I would be very interested in learning how you managed to link the two names, to find out if the line you have traced is related to mine. James Donne is my great-great grandfather, and his occupation in 1851 was as a tin miner in St Blazey.

My greatgrandmother was Catherine Jane Doney born March 1870 in Cornwall England is there anyone you may know of who can look up her birth record for her parents name? She came over to the usa around 1876-1879 in steerage but I havent been about to find where she arrived to or her parents.
99 Jo Ann Allan
I have traced my way to Matthew Doney, born St. Pinnock in 1813 according to the 1851 Cornwall census. He and his family were living in St. Cleer at the time. He is my ggggrandfather. He married Priscilla born in St. Neot in 1815. They had 3 daughters - Priscilla b. 1841, Emma Jane b. 1843, and Mary b. 1845.
100 Mary Doney
I am searching for Nicholas Doney, the father of Richard, Samuel, and Ernest. Richard was born in Cornwall on Sept. 18, 1854 and came to Calumet, Michigan in 1874. Samuel and Ernest also emigrated to Michigan, but Ernest returned to England and died there. Richard's obituary listed "two sisters in Cornwall" as survivors. Richard said he came from Redruth.
101 Kendall
I noticed that you had Betha M Doney (b. 2/5/29 d. 12/16/96) in your list of Doneys. My mother was adopted and her biological mother was Betha Doney. Betha was 1/2 cherokee by her mother who was full cherokee. I am looking for information on Betha's mother. Betha's maiden name was Smith. Do you have any information on this person or do you know how I might find her name?

We have been searching for ancestors of Enos Doney, of Minnesota, USA, for some time and stumbled across your site through a friend's reference. "My" Enos was born in Pennsylvania, USA about 1835, and died in Minnesota in January of 1896. We have always assumed he may have had German origins, but now your site gives us more information to watch.

I am very interested to read your "Doney research" my paternal Grand mother was "Adelaide Doney" she married "William James Holmes" in St Pauls church, Waterhouses, Co Durham, England. in 1906 and had nine children baptized there.
I have a problem with this though.
On her marriage certificate she was ninteen years old and named her father as "John Doney"(deceased) she was residing in "Hamsteels" the next village from that which she married.
I cannot locate her on the St Cath index and was hopeing that you may have come across her name.
I have found an "Adeline Doney" Born 1886 Co Durham and her father was "John" so I applied for this berth certificate.
The mother is "Jane Ann Goyin" b South Sydenham Devonshire, she married "John" in 1871 in Launceston (from the free bmd site),I cannot find "Adelaide" or "Adeline" or "Jane Ann" on any census returnes untill 1901 when I found she was named as "Jane Ann Hibbins" having remarried in 1996,she was living with three daughters, Martha 19y, Adeline 14y, and Louisa 11y (all named as stepchildren to "William Hibbins")
I have two "Johne Doney" Deaths for 1995 in the area, One in "Sunderland" and one in "Houghton-le-spring.
How can I prove that this is my Adelaide (according to a grand son, she answered to the name Adeline,(she also had a Daughter Of the same name)
Why then if this was her name would she sign herself as "Adelaide" on her marriage and har childrens baptisms.
( also have my fathers Birth and Marriage certificates with "Adelaide"on them)
Can somone help me to solve this?
My ancestors Henry E. (b. abt 1812) and Mary Ann (b. abt 1811) Sweet came to Maryland, USA from St. Neot, Cornwall, sometime bet 1847-1860 with their 3 sons
William H. Sweet b. Aug 28 1836 (Cornwall, England)
Joseph E. Sweet b. abt. 1844 (Cornwall, England)
Thomas Doney Sweet (my g-g-grandfather) b. abt 1846 (Cornwall, England)
I also found the following marriage record on the LDS site:
MARY ANN DONEY m. HENRY EVA SWEET 17 JUN 1834 Saint Neot, Cornwall, England
Also in the 1841 St. Neot Census there is a Henry and Maryann Sweet (Milltown), of the correct ages (assuming they were rounded down to 25 as I understand they were supposed to be) with son William - age 4 (and another younger son Samuel (who may have died young)).
My g-g-grandfather, Thomas Doney Sweet, named HIS 2 sons William H. and Samuel - so the "Samuel" above wasn't a big surprise.
Now -- here's my problem. The only Mary Ann Doney I can locate, of the correct approximate birth year (abt. 1811) , is the daughter of Thomas Doney and Elizabeth Lord. However, in the 1841 census -- Henry and Maryann Sweet are living in (or at?) Milltown, St. Neot with(?) Samuel (b. abt 1783) and Ann (b. abt 1784) Doney. I would think, that if Thomas and Elizabeth (Lord) Doney are the correct parents, that I would be able to identify Samuel and Ann Doney -- but I can't. Or perhaps Samuel and Ann are the correct parents... (but still, who are they? where do they fit in?). I;m also not clear what it means that they were all living at/in "Milltown"? Were they sharing a house? Or several houses sharing a court?
Do you know anything about the Doneys in southern Tennessee? I know my great-grandfather is buried in Decherd, along with several others going back to the 1800’s. I am in my mid 40’s myself. I have always been told we came from the American Indian Doneys, but I am not sure. I do know that most of my relatives were Methodists. Do you have any info? My grand father was William Richard.

I am doing some research on a friend's Doney family . So far I've found a Arthur Doney and wife Sarah (Salter) Doney marriage date 05 Nov 1894 Clay County Illinois. On the 1900 census of Richland County Il. it states that Arthur was born in Kansas as were his parents. Do you have any information on this family? Any help would be appreciate.

I started researching my "DONEY" ancestors aprox two years ago, I
was looking for my grandmother "Adelaid Doney" birth and was having
little success! She was infact baptized as "Adeline" in Chester-le-street,
Co Durham.
My research of the family includes all of her siblings some of their marriages
and children, I have them on the 1871 1881, 1891 and 1901 census !
I also have possible siblings for John! I am waiting until I can afford to send
for his marriage certificate, as I have invested quite a bit lately on other
branches of my tree! I am sure when i have that I will probably connect to one
of the familys on your site!(there are two possible matches)
Doneys
Louisa 1889 Co Durham
Adeline/Adelaide 1886 Co Durham
Martha (ab 1881/82) Co Durham
Mary Ann (ab1875/76) Co Durham

We are a group of religious women living here in Sacramento. What we thought was a simple piece of concrete turned up to be the headstone of George Doney died, November 29, 1916, aged 60 years, 2 months. We have looked through the geneology and cannot find any reference to a George Doney who lived about that time in Sacramento.
Could you shed any light on this person or offer any additional advice as to how we could research this person further.

I think I am related to Jack Doney who was born Jul 26 1925. He was my Grandpa. He lived in Fremont Michigan and died at the age of 62 from lung cancer. I'm not sure it was lung cancer, but I know it was some type of cancer. I think that Inez Doney on your website might also be in my family. I know we had an Inez.
I am looking for decendents of Carletos Henry Doney of W.Pittston, PA . His parental information also William Henry Doney & Elizabeth Davis of Seelyville, PA.

I am researching my Family tree for the surname of Coffey from Torpoint, Cornwall and discovered this grave entry
I am descended from a John Coffey who's occupation was a mason
I am in the process of proving these people in this grave are my Ancestors.
I found a christening for a Thomas Doney Rogers 26/12/1762 in Quethiock, Cornwall, Father Samuel Rogers, Mother Jane.
I then found a marriage between Samuel Rogers and Jane Doney 31/05/1759 in Quethiock, Cornwall which seems to fit with the people in the grave in Antony, Cornwall

I'm researching my mothers family name, Doney, and was directed to your site.
I have been in contact with a gentleman by the name of Arthur, surname unknown,
who thinks our Gt Gt Grandfathers are related, Richard bn 1838 and John bn 1844
both to Samuel bn 1812-1816. The only John Doney bn 1844 on your site, that
I can find anyway, married a different women and had different children than
I know of! Arthur also warned me that there is another Samuel Doney on your
site, bn 1811, but
you have no further information about him listed.
I have a direct line going back to a John Doney, bn 1844 in North Hill.
He married Jane Ann Goyin of South Sydneham, Devon in 1870. In the 1871 census
they have a 2 month old daughter, Elizabeth Jane, and are living at Greystone
Mine in the Parish of Lezant. I know they had William John in 1873 (my Gt Grandfather),
he was born in Spennymoor, Durham. The other siblings I know about are Martha
1882, Adelina 1887 and Louisa 1890, all born in the Durham area. I don't know
if there are any more. In the 1891 census they were living at Waldridge, just
down
the road from Kyo, although Elizabeth was married and living in Walker, Tyneside.
Martha was also with her.
John Doney died in 1894, aged 50, I don't yet know how. By the 1901 census Jane Ann had remarried, WIlliam Hibbins, and was living in Southwick, Sunderland with Martha, Adelina and Louisa. William John married in 1899, and my grandfather John was born in 1900.
Since writing this I have again been in contact with Arthur and we have disproved the theory that my John and his Richard are brothers... he is leaning towards the other Samuel Doney, which has has no info for, being the link between us. He believes the two Samuels were cousins, the connection being their Grandparents, William Doney bn 1735 and Elizabeth Souther.

My DONY or DAUNY have an origin Francaise in particular from the east of France as you can see him on my site. http://francois.bigey.free.fr/ (After clicking on it, go to the section of surnames then find Dony and click on it.) However from certain time (period) their patronymic was a CHAPELIER. However, it seems that he(it) came from the invasions Suedoises which decimated Lorraine. (Environment(middle) 17eme).

The Mary Doney in my tree was born 1765, baptised 23 Jul 1765, married Thomas Goldswain 21 Feb 1784, and died 2 Aug 1784. They had one child that I am aware of; Jeremiah born 1784, baptised 2 Aug 1784 and died 19 Dec 1784. All in all it looks like a pretty tragic story of both mother and son dying soon after childbirth.

My Doney connection is via two marriages to individuals in my Cawrse line from St. Neot, Cornwall. Most of the Doney information came from Ann Fletcher in South Africa who got some of it from Bev Weseling in Ohio. Otis Slusher, who came from Ohio and now lives in Florida, sent me some of it via post-it notes at my RootsWeb site.
You might want to check out my other two web sites listed below. The Family Tree Maker site has 104 photos and documents. Ann sent me some of the photos from South Africa. The RootsWeb site has detailed source information.

My ggg-grandfather was Sampson WILTON who married Elizabeth Jane SWEET. I have looked at the WILTON site and thanks to that site I can trace my line back to "Prima Wilton" of Lanreath. (Incidentally on my father's side I also have an Alsen WILTON of Lanreath, also descended from "Prima" marrying John ALLEE in Lanreath).
I am descended from Sampson's son Thomas who married Mary DONEY in 1873.
I am interested in gathering more information about the children of Thomas WILTON & Mary DONEY.

Thomas married Beatrice Maud SYMONS in 1905. My grandfather was their eldest son Thomas Henry born in Dobwalls nr Liskeard in 1906. After Beatrice's death in 1911 Thomas married Irene BRAY.
I would be very interested in anyone else researching this line.
127. Marilyn Ellis
My husband and I are researching the family of Elizabeth (Betsey) Fast who married 28 April 1822 in Newton Ferrers, Devon to Samuel Doney and had two children:
Mary baptised 10 October 1824 in Newton Ferrers, Devon and
Richard baptised 4 August 182 in Newton Ferrers, Devon. Richard, I have been able to follow as in the census he has always put Newton as a place of birth.
Mary is the one I have not been able to find.
Samuel Doney must have died as Elizabeth married 28 November 1828 John Ellis and had more children.
In 1841 John and Elizabeth Ellis were at Soap Factory, Southdown, Cornwall with Ellis children but without the Doney children who would have been adults by then.

I am trying to find information on Perry Doney, a long ago coach here at Groton,
South Dakota (1950s-1960s?) I want to write a story about him in my local weekly
newspaper... Groton Dakota Press. Groton is celebrating its 125th anniversary
this summer and a lot of Groton High School alumni are coming back who inquired
about him.
Is the Perry you mentioned on your site... born 1908 died 1989, the same Perry Doney, who lived in Groton, SD at one time?
If he is, could you give me more history about him?

I am looking for my family line of Doneys in Devon - the North Bovey, Mortonhampstead and Lustleigh area.
I have what I presume are three Brothers and their families
1 - Henry Doney married Elizabeth Roberts in 1694 in Lustleigh, Devon Their children were John 1697 Lustleigh, Richard 1699 Lustleigh, Susanna 1702 Lustleigh and Elizabeth 1695 Lustleigh.
2 - John Doney married Janey Laskey in 1692 in Mortonhampstead, Devon Their Children were Jane 1693 Mortonhampstead, John 1699 Mortonhampstead and Joane 1695 Mortonhampstead
3 - William Doney wife unknown
His children were John 1691 North Bovey and Sidwell born 1687 North Bovey.
All these areas are local to each other and the three brothers are the earliest I can find in that area of Devon- does anyone know where and when they were born and who their parents were.

Nehemiah’s
patents have been a real challenge for my but I have that genealogy “gut
feeling” that he was one of the sons of William Doney ( 1764) and his wife
Rebecca Seaby. When Nehemiah move to Tioga Co., NY William also moved- and
just a short distance from Nehemiah. I may be wrong, but everything I have seen
so far is sending me in this direction. Two of the children William and
John had family names, but they are very common names throughout
Kate Donie was my gggrandmother who witnessed Andrew Lettau marriage by Father Sheffeld. My ggrandfather Peter Donie was her son who married Christina Lattau in Hubbard/Youngstown Ohio. Must be a connection somewhere. What related data might you have I wonder? Can you check?

Ours line is from Germany. My wife’s (Kathy Doney) line dates back to Johan Nickalas Doney, the Hessian soldier who settled in Northumberland County after the Revolutionary War. We’re missing a link between Gerson Doney Snr 1815-1891 who married Catherine (Dunkleberger) in Northumberland County, PA and migrated to Emerickille, Jefferson County PA around 1948 and his grandson, Gerson Doney. I’m trying to find out who Gerson’s parents were.

I
am researching a Doney family who were based in Australia in the late
1800s.
John Doney was apparently born in 'Devonshire" according to
his death record. He died at age 40 in 1879, so I assume he was born in
1839 (or thereabouts).
On the birth record of his daughter Rosina,
it says he was born in ----bridge, Devonshire. (The first part of the word is
hard to read but I think it may be Swimbridge. Of course I could be
wrong).
John married Elizabeth Truscott in 'Plymouth, Devonshire'
on 9 July 1865.
I have found a record on www.freebmd.org
for a marriage in 1865 in Stoke Dameral, Devon which I think may be
theirs.
According to his death records John's parents were Thomas
Doney and Jane Whitburn.
I was wondering whether you had come
across this particular line and had any further information regarding Thomas and
Jane, and any other children they may have had.

My g*2 grandmother was Sophia Doney (1828) daughter of John Doney and Mary Toll = all in your tree.
Sophia married John Kellow in 1847 and they lived in St Cleer Cornwall. John died in 1864 and in 1871 census Sophia and her children (Jospeh Charles Kellow, Ann Kellow, John Doney Kellow, Emma Jane Kellow, Mary Grace Kellow, Sophia Kellow, William Charles Kellow) appeared in Cramlington Northunberland.(where her brother Richard Doney married to Ann Warne) was living.
Soon after many of the children emgrated to South Australia. I'm not sure whether Sophia did also but her daughter Sophia married George Herrington in Adelaide in 1885 at brother Joseph's house. I have yet to find when or how many emigrated (and South Australia is a black hole for family research). I'd be most interested if anyone has any information about this.
