HENRY BEST 1798 -

Henry was born about 1798 in Cornwall, England and on the 13th October 1821 he married Mary Julian.  On the marriage certificate Henry made his

mark whilst Mary was able to sign her name.  Witnesses to the marriage were John Best and John Rawe.  (P/C of marriage certificate).

Mary’s family was well established in Roche.  Henry and Mary raised their nine children in Cornwall at Roche, a small parish to the northeast of St. Dennis Parish.  Their address in Roche was Little Trerank.  Henry was a farm labourer.

Mary and Henry raised 9 children. They were all baptised in Roche.

James bapt.   14 May 1838

Mary died sometime after the birth of James in 1838 and before the census of 1841.

The details in the 1841 Census of Henry’s family are as follows:

Henry, aged 40 years, Agricultural Labourer.  Born St Stephens in Brannel. Cornwall.

Mary, aged 18 years.      Born in Roche.

Elizabeth, aged 9 years.           *

Samuel, aged 6 years.              *

Jane, aged 4 years.                  *

Henry had neighbours as there was another family listed at the same address of Little Trerank.  They were John Rowse, his wife and 3 children.  Further along the road at the Parsonage Gate lived Elinor Pinch, aged 60 years, a pauper.  Next was Elizabeth Robins, aged 65 years, who, with her daughter Gertrude, aged 20 years, were of independent means.  In the same area were the George family of Parkwoon and the Cock family of Trerank Common, both miners.

Henry married again on the 25th December 1848 to Jane Woon, born about 1805. (any connection to Parkwoon?).   They had one child, George who was christened on 25 December 1848 at Roche.

The Census of 1851 shows the following:

Henry, aged 53, lived at Trerank, Roche, Cornwall

Jane, aged 46,   lived at Trerank, Roche, Cornwall

George, aged 2,       lived at Trerank, Roche, Cornwall

Samuel, aged 15,    lived at Trerank, Roche, Cornwall

The Census recorded Henry’s occupation as gardener.

The Census took ages to the nearest grouping 15, 20 years, etc for adults.  Samuel was actually 17 at the time.  The four eldest sons were not living at home according to the Census of 1841 and 1852

George is the son of Jane Woon and Samuel was the son of Mary Julian.

The 1871 Cornwall Census shows the following:

THOMAS BEST 1828 -

Thomas was christened on the 6th January 1828 at Roche, Cornwall, England.  He was the 4th child of Henry Best and Mary Julian.

Thomas married Sabina Birch Trethewey on the 11th October 1856 in the district of St Austell, County of Cornwall.

Sabina was born about 1839 in Cornwall.  (Her parents, Richard Trethewey, a farmer, and Martha Richards, were married at St Stephens-in-Brannel, Cornwall on the 13 February 1838.)

The marriage certificate provides the following information:

Thomas Best, age 25 years, Bachelor, Farm Labourer, of St Stephens, father Henry Best, Farmer.

Sabina Birch, 18 years, Spinster, lived at home, St Stephens, father Richard Trethewey, Farmer.

Thomas Best signed with a mark \.

Sabina Birch Trethewey signed as required as she could both read and write.

The ages of both on their marriage certificates do not tally with their birth and death ages.  Thomas must have been 28 not 25 at the time of his marriage and Sabina 18, not 17.  Thomas was 10 years older than Sabina.

Thomas and Sabina left England in 1856.

Thomas’ death certificate states he was born in Roche, Cornwall, had been in Victoria for 54 years, was aged 84 years, son of Henry Best, farm labourer and Mary Best, maiden name unknown.  Thus he died about 1911.  Sabina died 1928 in Victoria.

Thomas’ name is not on the Voters Electoral Rolls in Victoria in 1903 and 1908 but Sabina’s name is there.

Her grandmother, Elizabeth, a widow, raised Sabina.  Sabina’s great aunt, Mary Birch, also raised her.  Elizabeth and Mary Birch were annuitants on a large property, “Treviscoe”, owned by Elizabeth’s son Joseph Pearce Richards.  One of the servants was Elizabeth Mellow who married William Truscott.

Thomas and Sabina had 10 children, all born in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia.

I've been working with a number of different people on the Best line as well as a number of other family lines from England. I have a connection to Thomas Richard Best who married Sabina Birch Trethewy. Actually it doesn't appear that he is a direct relation of mine but I've got him on my tree. I can't tell you exactly why he is there without doing a bit more research to figure it all out. Other names I am researching are Mellow, Yelland, Cundy, Pearce,Thomas, Body/Boddy, Phillips,Snell, Martin, Stephens, Stick, Ellis,Youlton, Stoate, John, and Sampson. I'll let you know if I can figure out the connection. Patty Mellow-Stoffels
