An interesting comment:
From the book, "Tehidy and the Bassets," by Michale
Tangye, published
1984 by Dyllansow Truran, ISBN# 0 907566 97 9
(this book used to be available thru CFHS...not sure if that's still the
case)...
"The Bassets had lived so long at Tehidy that tales and
legends were bound to grow, and the Squires and gentry were not the only
people to
have deep roots in one spot. The Trevarthens, an old tale ran, especially
in their family, has served the Bassets for 700 years, remaining in their
thatched cottage until the estate was finally sold. When the Normans and
their supporters met at Truro to divide the land, a Basset and Trevarthen
were told that whichever of them should reach Tehidy first could claim the
Manor.
Mounted on fine horses, they set off from Truro at a terrific
pace.Trevarthen led until within sight of Tehidy but was suddenly thrown
from his steed. Basset carried on to win both the race and the manor. Today
the Trevarthens recount that but for that misfortune, they would have
inhabited the mansion - and the Bassets the cottage!"

Please email me with any information
Jane Grigg was the widow of ? Bassett and had a son Richard born in 1849. She married Thomas Varcoe on 15 November 1850. If anyone can tell me anything else about her first husband and his family I would love to hear from them.
I am descended from a Martha Bassett of Cornwall (so perhaps a distant cousin to you) I am having no luck at all in identifying Martha Bassett. I am her Great Grand Son & this is everything I know about her (my Gt Grand Mother, Martha Bassett)
Martha Bassett was (allegedly) born in Cornwall .... she then ---> Married John Wright (a seaman whom I also have had no success in tracing) of Essex ---> Migrated to New Zealand approx. in between 1865 - 1890. One of my constant bothers is ... in which order the above events happened (ie: were they married in England or NZ ???)
Martha Bassett & John Wright then had several children whom I also cannot trace via records excepting for my Grand Father 'Herbert Victor Alexander Ambrose Wright' who was born on 12.6.1891 in Wellington NZ.
Therefore I ask in all sincerity for any information you could provide to help identify my Gt Grand Mother.
I am looking for info re John BASSETT and his wife Anne Hicks CHEESEWORTH
who came to South Australia with 3 young children (Anne Marie b.1834 John
b.18 Jun 1836 & Henry Rosette b.1840) who arrived South Oz in February
1840 on the 'Java'. They then had other children: William, James & Richard.
THE Bassett family I belong to came from Helston in Cornwall England. And moved to Okehampton Devon England in approx 1920. Grand fathers name Walter.
My name is Joseph Ellsworth Bassett. My Father is William Ellsworth Bassett Jr, Son of William Ellsworth Bassett, Eustis FL, born 09/07/24. His parents were Joseph Houard Bassett and Willie Eltelle Buchalts. Joseph was born in Oil City, PA, and was the son of Fred Ellsworth Bassett. They moved to Kansas in the mid to late 1800's. The family move to Eustis, FL. in 1904. I have much more information on my part of the Bassett family.
One of my ggmothers was born Mary Ann Bassett c.1858 in Bermondsey. Her parents were William D. Bassett born c 1831-Bermondsey and Hannah (Ann) Ford born c.1821 in Deptford. Children of William D. and Hannah were, William born 1856 Bermondsey, Mary Ann, James, John, Catherine and David all born Deptford. William D. was a wood merchant and family history is that the Bassetts were from Cornwall and owned tin mines no less!- I have yet to trace a marriage for William D. and Hannah. Thanks.
I connect to the direct Bassett information listed on your web page, the line of Joseph Ellsworth Bassett gave me a wonderful lead. He is the descendant of my great-grandmother, Sarah Grace Bassett's, brother.
