Haven't the slightest idea how to make a website? Well here are a few programs that can help you and they don't cost a thing. Remember, you can also create webpages through common programs like Microsoft Word, PAF, FamilyTreeMaker, and many others.
DNS Nameservers tell your domain name registrar (i.e. GoDaddy) where your website server is located in the world. AncestryHost's DNS nameservers are:
NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM
NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM
You must provide these nameserver addresses to your domain name registrar so they can redirect traffic to our server where your website is located. If you need further assistance with this please contact us.
File Transfer Protocol, better known as FTP, is a procedure used to upload and download files to and from a web server. In order to use FTP, you'll need to download and install a software program on your computer. Here are a few free FTP programs:
When you first launch the FTP program, a startup screen will appear. This screen will enable you to add your website information and allow the program to connect with our server. You simply fill in the information where indicated with the following information:
Profile Name - This name will be added to the selection list of profile names. Select your profile name according to your domain. For example, if your domain name were pioneerancestors.com, your might set your profile name to "Pioneer Ancestors".
Host Name/Address - Your FTP address. For example: ftp.ancestryhost.org
Username/User ID - Your FTP username you received from AncestryHost. For example: smith@ancestryhost.org
Password - Your FTP password. This is the password you created when you registred.
Depending on which FTP client you use, the names may be slightly different.
Once the FTP program has connected with your server, you will see the files on your computer in the left window and the files on the server will be displayed in the right window.
Transferring Files
To maneuver through your folders, simply double click on them. To transfer your files, either double click on the file or highlight it and then click on the transfer files arrow.
To select more than one file at a time, click on each file you'd like to transfer while holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard. If all of the files you'd like to upload are all together, you can click on the first file while holding down your Shift key and use the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight all of your files.
As stated in our Terms of Service, every page hosted on our servers must contain a "link back". A link back is a web link that directs a user back to AncestryHost's default homepage (www.ancestryhost.org). This is required so that users know what server your information is being hosted on and provides your guest with access to our Terms of Service.
This is one example of a "link back" and the accompanying html code:
MySQL is database that uses a language called SQL (Structured Query Language) for adding, accessing, and processing data in a database. That is probably more than you care to know!
MySQL is frequently used in genealogy programs, such as The Next Generation in Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG). In order to run such programs requiring MySQL you need a separate username, database name, and password.
Please contact us if you are in need of a MySQL database and we will set you one up.
