(29 May 1760-7 Jan 1832) Bookseller, of 54, Paternoster Row, City of London, England (London Directories 1796-1840) ; born near Masham, Yorkshire, England ; worked on father's farm until aged 20 ; went to London and took employment with a wholesale woollen draper; started out as a bookseller in the year 1790 in a shop in Long Lane, Aldersgate, London, England ; in 1796 moved his shop to 54 Paternoster Row ; he appears to have been on both sides of the law ( Right. and Wrong. ) ; he travelled to Europe in search of rare books for his clients ; had a house in the country ; his business suffered during the publishing depression c1825 (banks refused to cash cheques issued by publishers at this time) ; he was listed as bankrupt in The Times in 1828 with his son and partner John Baynes ; Despite having debts totalling £35,000 and assets excluding bad and doubtful debts of £17,500, the business did continue even surviving William himself ; died aged 70 at Paternoster Row, City of London, England ; buried on 13 Jan 1832 at the Wesley Chapel, City Road, London, England .
