Samuel Bailey 1739-1805
Extract from "History of City Road Chapel", p445, by George J.Stevenson published 1872.

Grave No.95 [In memory of Samuel Bailey of Tottenham, who departed this life January 20th 1805 aged 66 years.
Also Elizabeth Bailey, wife of the above, died April 6th 1816 aged 75 years.]

Samuel Bailey was a useful member of the community for many years and an acceptable local preacher connected with City Road Society and the Foundry. Often when appointed to preach at the Foundry, he would get some other brother to take his place within the Foundry, that he might gather & preach to a congregation in the open air in Moorfields. He was the last local preacher who was planned to preach at the outdoor service in Moorfields. He removed in his last days to the village of Tottenham, where he died at the age of 66. He was interred at City Road, near the east wall opposite to the side entrance. No stone was set up to mark his resting place, but through his labours as a preacher many were brought to a knowledge of Jesus Christ, obtained pardon, and became useful methodists. A few of his friends still survive, and remember his funeral. One of his sons married a daughter of William Baynes, the well known bookseller. See No 42. One of their daughters was married to Mr Jones, a linen draper in Islington. She died of heart disease at the residence of Mrs Baynes her sister.

These last sentences are incompatible with each other and with the evidence obtained from the same source on William Baynes and his wife. The third from last sentence should probably read.... "One of his daughters married William Baynes, the well known bookseller."
