La Providence was the name of the French Hospital which was situated in Hackney, London to look after those of Huguenot descent who had fallen on bad times or were no longer able to look after themselves. It was in essence a charitable workhouse.
They had two types of dependents, Internal, living in the hospital, and External, who were paid a 'pension' to enable them to live an independent life.
The records of the hospital are especially rich in the eyes of genealogists because the dependents had to prove their huguenot descent before becoming eligible for relief (The Coqueau Charity). These proofs were duly recorded and have survived through to the present day, The Huguenot Society of London has published extracts from the archives as Volume 52 of their Quarto series of publications.

A letter was read from Miss Baynes (aged 60) asking that the allowance of £12 per annum might be continued to herself. It was ... Resolved that as Miss Baynes is the recipient of the Coqueau Charity it is inexpedient to make any further permanent grant, but that the sum of £5 be given to Miss Baynes to help meet the expenses to which she has been put in consequence of her father's death."
[N.B. In view of the details of her father's name given in the petition of Charlotte Baynes (q.v.) the initials J. H would appear to be an error].
