- The Times 25th September 1878

At SOUTHWARK, Messrs William Potier and Son, gut manufacturers, Green-street, Friar-street, Blackfriars-road, were summoned before Mr Partridge by Mr Ross, an inspector in the service of the Metropolitan Board of Works, for causing an intolerable nuisance in carrying on their business. Mr Spencer who prosecuted on behalf of the Metropolitan Board of Works, said that the nuisance had called forth very strong remarks from Mr Benson, one of the magistrates at the court and had been loudly complained of by passengers on the London, Chatham & Dover Railway passing between the Elephant and Castle station and the Blackfriars station, besides the multitude of poor people compelled to live in the immediate vicinity of the defendant's factory. The defendants were gut manufacturers in a large way of business. In 1874, when the new Act of Parliament was passed to compel such persons to prevent the escape of noxious vapours from their factories, the defendants promised to have "closed chambers" and to provide such effectual means as were necessary. Twelve months were allowed them to do it, but no alterations were made. Since then several notices had been served on them and further time was granted but as they had neglected to comply with the Act of Parliament the present proceedings were taken. The filthy smells still emitted from their factory were loudly complained of by persons attending the police-court and the whole neighbourhood. Mr Thomas Samuel Ross, an inspector in the service of the Metropolitan Board of Works said that he had visited defendant's premises several times and suggested the necessary improvements and as they were not carried out notices were served on them in July last, and they were given to the 13th August to complete the alterations. Nothing, however, had been done up to the present time. On his last visit to the premises he found nothing done to prevent the nuisance. The tanks and vessels containing the "gut" were open and there were, in fact, no closed vessels or any means taken to destroy the noxious vapours. Mr Potier said that since Mr Ross visited his premises everything had been done to comply with the Act of Parliament. There were no offensive smells now. Mr Partridge doubted that, as the neighbourhood was still full of offensive smells. However, it was clear the defendants had not used the proper means to destroy the noxious vapours arising from their trade. They must pay a penalty of £20 and costs.

ILLICIT SPIRITS PROSECUTION - The Times 10th March 1933
FINES AMOUNTING TO £750

At the Mansion House Justice Room yesterday before Alderman Sir Plené Neal, Henry Gill of Southampton Road and Charles George Potier of Water Lane, City appeared on summonses charging them with bringing in spirits liable to duty with intent to defraud HM Customs. There were also summonses for dealing in the same spirits without a licence, handling them without a permit........ .... Mr Monier Williams, counsel for Potier said he would plead guilty to all the offences except those alleging fraud. He denied he ever had that intent. Potier was licensed as a dealer in spirits in Water Lane and also had a store for spirits in a cellar in Mincing Lane. Whisky was delivered to Mincing Lane with no excise or permit with them..... Potier traded as A.Sanders & Co and admitted purchasing the whisky from Gill.

Mr Potier was fined £500 and £15-15-0 costs.

Mr Monier Williams said Customs had 25 gallons of spirits seized and about £380 cash belonging to Mr Potier. Sir Plené Neal said... can't be penalised twice.... adjourned for a month to know what the Commissioners would do.
